- The news media in the morning kept talking about people finally being able to sign up for affordable health care. What they were signing up for was affordable (?) health insurance--which isn't effective until January 1, 2014. A lot of people didn't understand that.
- Long wait times on the CoveredCA.com web site--what did you expect? CoveredCA.com supposedly had over 1 million hits in the first 90 minutes. Most web sites would have issues with that kind of volume.
- CoveredCA.com and Healthcare.gov both crashed repeatedly--see above. You had tremendous volume, high demand, no surprise here.
- "See, see, we knew it wouldn't work, we knew there would be problems.' Grow up people--Yesterday was NOT the only day to sign up, you have until March 31, 2014 so don't be so juvenile! I'm not thrilled with all of this most certainly, but we're stuck for now.
There are definitely things that need to be worked on, like the plan designs. I think those will evolve over time because there are several aspects of the new designs that I think are detrimental, and not as good as many of the plans we have now. I think you'll see changes in those over the nest 1-2 years.
So if you are curious whether you should buy in or out of the exchange, remember that independent agents who complete the certification process for Covered California can help you with all of this. I've completed the process, several of my colleagues have as well. It does NOT cost you any more to use one of us, and you still have an advocate on your side if you do use us.
