Odessa, TX - Pity the animals who are picked up as strays in Odessa today. According to OA Online, the city animal control has put a halt on releasing animals to rescues.
This change in procedure is said to be temporary - only expecting to last a few weeks - but how many animals will be killed during that timeframe?
The reason for the city's change in procedure is logical. They want to verify that the rescues who are stepping up to take homeless animals out of the city's facility are legitimate.
They want to ensure that the rescues who are attempting to help have the means to care for those animals which they are taking in.
That portion of the argument makes sense.
Verifying that rescues are reputable helps to prevent shelter animals from becoming victims of hoarders.
That added effort saves animals from becoming victims...
But, why will implementing new procedures take weeks to complete?
Why will reputable rescue organizations with their paperwork complete be turned away in the meantime?
How many animals will be put to death until the city can get their paperwork and procedures in order?
According to the OA Online article, the local Humane Society has recently expanded their own facility and they have the means to take in animals from the city shelter - but they too, are being refused.
Individuals not affiliated with a rescue organization are still free to adopt from the city shelter.
But how many people are going to step in to save these animals between now and when the rescues can start to help again?
How many animals are going to die?

Of Note: The dog featured in the photo which accompanies this story is not a dog housed at the Odessa animal control. This is Muggs, a Labradoodle who is behind bars at the Lubbock animal control. Please visit Muggs' Petfinder profile at this link. Sadly for the animals at the Odessa Animal Control, I am not able to find anywhere online to view the animals who need to be saved.
