Ode to ABC's LOST

Once upon a time, there was a little show called LOST. Before it even premiered, I was determined not to like it because it was taking J.J. Abrams away from ALIAS and then ALIAS would suck. But LOST drew me in. “I’ll just watch a few minutes,” I told myself when the pilot aired. Then after a few minutes (and a few minutes more), I justified watching the second hour because, heck, I had already invested in the first hour.

The characters were complex but likable, and the plot was carefully crafted. It was intelligent writing, and challenging to follow. Each episode made me want more. I became obsessed.

Oh my goodness. This is it, folks. The final season of ‘Lost,’ when all our questions — and there are about 942³ of ’em — will hopefully be answered. This show dominates my life. Not even kidding — I’d chop off my pinkies to see the final episodes right now. As it is, I’ll have to wait until winter. My biggest concern? Avoiding spoilers. I want to be surprised. I want to be dazzled. I want to be left with my jaw on the floor come May. All I know is, they better not do one of those ‘Sopranos’-like endings when everything just fades to black. If they do that, I swear I will find the producers, get them in a diner, watch them order onion rings, walk into the bathroom and

Back in the day, someone created a wonderful site called LostLinks.net (remember that?). From 2005-06, it was the catch-all for everything LOST-related that was on the web. But the phenomenon grew too large to track on one site, and it was forced to achieve all content and cease operation.

Today, the availability of LOST media is staggering. Lostpedia, DarkUFO, Facebook groups (like You Know You're Addicted to LOST when... and You bailed on LOST like a sissy, so stop asking me to explain it now), clubs, blogs, merchandise, endless fansites … and don’t forget the proposed Disney attraction.  :->

 In reflecting on the past year and making resolutions for 2010, I have to include LOST on my list:

  1. I resolve NOT to be spoiled (like the time I chose to read that it was Shannon who would be the next to die on the island – wish I hadn’t done that);
  2. To enjoy LOST while it lasts and try not to be too disappointed when it all ends (who am I kidding?); and
  3. To post Season 6 articles in a timely fashion (since I will be too wound up after each new episode to sleep anyway).

Here’s to you, LOST. I look forward to our remaining time together and will miss you terribly when you’re gone. Thanks for giving me great television to look forward to each week, a challenging story arc to follow, and endearing characters to love. You will not be forgotten.
