Odd couples...Differences between us and our dates.

In the late 80s, Paula Abdul hit high on the charts with a track titled “Opposites Attract.” Keeping this theme in mind, how much of a hit can a potential relationship be if we’re way different than the woman we’re attracted to? Though not all inclusive, some of the following situations and categories you may come across with the women you catch in your dating crosshairs.

How tall is too tall?

Though some height differential is by no means death to a dating experience, often there are certain circumstances that usually can cancel the chances of a relationship. Aside from getting gawked at in public, being too much taller or shorter than your girlfriend creates physical awkwardness. This is especially true if you’re one who’s a foot and a half shorter than your favored female.

The partier and the non-drinker                                                                                                                            Contrasting styles can be perceived as a positive between parties in a romance, but the amount of alcohol consumed is an issue apart that is likely to create conflict. When there is a non drinker and hard partier dating, clashing over money due to a dozen double digit bar tabs per week, or the fidelity of the drinker as they bar hop while the dry date waits up at home is likely if not certain.

The materialist and the frugal frontrunner

When you have the drive for a designer wardrobe, and she’s spending 50 cents per outfit at the thrift store or vice versa, again the opposite extremes on the spectrum can become a constraint on your relationship. Much like when an alcoholic and a non-drinker date, financial strain challenges the health of your romance, especially when one person is spending $500 for a new shirt and the other is spending 500 cents for an entire wardrobe.

The liberal leader and captain conservative…

It’s always been said that politics and religion are taboo topics when on a first date. Eventually though, the secrets of your side will leak as you and her begin to learn more about each other. Unlike alcohol consumed, or fashion taste, there is usually no financial or fidelity questions brought about from your party alignment. Tolerance, listening to her viewpoint, and having an open mind are advised to maintain a favorable approval rating with your girlfriend.
