Octopus carries coconuts to build shelter (see youtube video). Australian scientists discovered an octopus that collects coconut shells for its shelter. Researcher said that this is sophisticated behavior unseen before and this is the first evidence of an invertebrate animal using a tool.
One the researchers said he laughed so hard while filming the octopus because he was shocked when it picked up the coconut and ran off with it. He said he wasn’t expecting that to happen. The octopus selected halved coconut shells from the ocean floor, cleaned them out, and then carried them under their bodies up to 65 feet, and then assembled two shells to make shelter and a hiding spot.
The study was conducted from 1998 to 2008, and the findings were published Tuesday in the journal, Current Biology. The internet buzz on this story and video is hot right now because the story was just released today, and because people find it fascinating that an octopus can be so smart in securing shelter.
