October is the month of events for the disability community; events that encourage participation from people of all abilities and to raise awareness. In addition to October being designated National Disability Employment Awareness month, it is also Dyslexia Awareness Month designated by the state legislature of Virginia.
Raising awareness and the need for volunteers is always on the forefront of all disability related organizations. And for October, here are a few organizations that need your attendance, and your volunteer outreach to the community.
The Virginia Home provides compassionate and professional residential care to adult Virginians with irreversible physical disabilities, ensuring that their lifelong comfort and security will never be compromised regardless of ability to pay.
Upcoming October events:
October 19th (9am-1pm) Hands On Greater Richmond Saturday. You can sign up as a volunteer. Also, they would love to borrow your gardening supplies. Please drop those items off by Thursday October 17th.
October 24th (6-8pm) Halloween Boo House and Social. You can help the residents enter and escape our creepy Boo House. Also, if you have costumes or decorations you would like to donate they are always interested in upgrading our stuff!
October 26th (7pm) at VHS - Light the Night. Sign up to walk or consider making a donation online for Team The Virginia Home. All donations support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Richmond Entrepreneur's Assistance Program (REAP) provides comprehensive job training and meaningful employment for individuals with disabilities.

October 19, 2013 HandsOn Day Volunteers will assemble, fill, and create gift boxes and baskets on a production line alongside individuals with disabilities
October 26-27, 2013 Gifts for Grandma & Grandpa, Too – St. Mary Catholic Church
International Dyslexia Association (IDA) provides the most comprehensive range of information and services that address the full scope of dyslexia and related difficulties in learning to read and write...in a way that creates hope, possibility, and partnership.
Upcoming October event:
October 26, 2013 Motorcycle Fun Run for Dyslexia Awareness
This is an event to raise awareness and dollars for the Virginia Branch of the International Dyslexia Association. It will begin at Poppa’s Pub in Virginia Beach, 2105 Diamond Springs Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23445. And it includes free food, entertainment, door prizes, raffle and auction.
Volunteering is a VALUABLE ASSET to the community; it provides a win/win solution for a cause. The organization wins by your generosity of your time and talents and you win by participating in an amazing outreach to the community.
