So, Halloween is just around the corner and that means Trick-or-treat and that means COOKIES!
But, you can’t give away anything home made you say, because it’s dangerous. People won’t let their kids eat anything that isn’t commercially manufactured, you say. Hey! Don’t buy into this bogus conspiracy perpetrated by the commercial candy industry! There have been damn few incidents and the candy industry jumped on them and turned it to their benefit. Now, of course, one can understand the concern, but there are ways to circumvent any potential risk factor.
First, and this is advocated by all police departments and child advocacy groups. DO NOT allow your kids to be greedy little sods and trick-or-treat out of your neighborhood! Do not put them in the car and drive them around to neighborhoods where the take is going to be better. Stay in your own neighborhood where you know most of your neighbors.
And for those of you who would like to be able to give out nice, homemade goodies, try this: Print up small slips of paper with your name, address and phone number and Happy Halloween and put one in each little bag of goodies. When I have done this I have had many parents phone me and thank me for providing non-commercial treats.
Favorites over the years have been my decorated sugar cookies, chocolate chip cookies, pumpkin-spice muffins and plain ol’ popcorn. The kids go nuts over popcorn, which surprises me.
So, if you have the time, why not have an safe old fashion Halloween this year and hand out distinctive home made treats.
