October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, as is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. After finding the strength to move on from over a decade of physical and emotional abuse from the hands of an ex-boyfriend, I decided to share my story of survival in my co-authored book, “Pursuing Your Destiny”; where I emerge from a victim to a victor of domestic violence.
For years I hid the scars of this painful relationship from co-workers and friends – even family. Then I came across the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence site, and realized – I would never be able to leave unless I found the confidence and acceptance of inner strength to finally walk away - for good.
There is no secret to the suffering domestic violence brings, but awareness of one’s ability to move forward with peace and understanding will always reign over ignorance and judgment.
