“Here we are, ONE MONTH TO THANKSGIVING! Thought about the wine you want to serve, or take with you to share with your holiday hosts? Now is the time to start looking. In fact, it your “to be” hosts are friends (might make sense) and available, take them with you this Friday! They may divulge which wine, you two are tasting, that they love! Return to the shop later, and secure a bottle or two.
“This week, lot’s of options, and the prices are decidedly lower this week. Yet, we must first see our video selection; it stole the show, but watchi it with your cat. , so grab your cat, and watch this one together! Wine for Cats, Wine for Cats II
“Lots to choose from, consider a close together tastings, SE Portland does a good job of clustering wine shops, perhaps a great move of “coopetition.”
Now onto your selections; never taste wine alone! That’s the… well; NO ONE should taste wine alone!!!

PORTUGESE RED TASTING with David Baverstock
Thursday, Oct. 24th . 5pm - 7pm . Free
“Few winemakers in Portugal possess the experience and enjoy the respect afforded to David Baverstock. A native of Adelaide, Australia, David arrived in Portugal in 1982 and his career includes influential stints with Symington, Quinta de la Rosa, Quinta do Fojo, and Quinta do Crasto. He is a subtle, charming, and confident man, not unlike his wines. Today he is the director of winemaking at Herdade Esporão in the Alentejo, as well as Esporão's project in the Douro, the ancient Quinta dos Murças.
“Esporão is known for sun-filled, juicy, drinkable reds from the Alentejo, and Murças is a very old port lodge with many vines planted just after phylloxera hit, over 100 years ago. If you've ever wanted to taste the terroir of the Douro expressed by 40 different grape varieties in one wine, this is a tasting you won't want to miss. David will be pouring the following from his current lineup. All of the reds are quite affordable and how can you pass up the sumptuous Tawny Port! From Alentejo: 2011 Esporão "Monte Velho" Tinto, 2011 Esporão "Arco" Tinto and 2010 Esporão Tinto Alentejo Reserva. From the Douro: 2010 Quinta dos Murças "Assobio" Douro Tinto and Quinta dos Murças 10 Year Tawny Port.”

Friday, October 25 our "Friday Tasting" 5:00 - 7:00 pm ...always ends at 7 pm sharp! --$5.00 fee--
Back by popular demand... Mr. Mike's “Tour de France” tasting:
Mr. Mike makes a cameo appearance this Friday pouring wines from France. He will feature wines from seven different regions with the unifying theme of elegant, dry-styled wines that are made to be served with food. The four reds are also all wines that are terrific now but can improve with short term cellaring.
1. Domaine Lafran-Veyrolles Rosé Bandol 2011 $19.99 Southern Coastal France
(65% Mourvedre, 25% Cinsault and 10% Grenache --The producer employs organic methods of production --although they are not certified.)
This rosé is has fresh, floral notes with hints of quince and nectarine. It is big bodied and rounded on the palate and finishes with some grip. It will match well with all the ocean has to offer as well as grilled pork chops and fresh cheeses. Piquant and racy, this wine has added lingering notes of herbal complexity from its bottle age.
2. Domaine Joseph Roty Marsannay Rosé 2010 $28.99 Burgundy
Hailing from the lauded 2010 vintage -Philipe Roty makes this rosé as if it were premier cru white Burgundy. No after-thought dry pink this! The Roty style that emphasizes an almost contemplative depth is on full display here. Don't be too quick to judge this wine -give this a second and third look, --terroir driven dry pink is not what many people expect (or want) from a rosé. However this is a matter of expectations and not general worth; the wine is amazing delicious upfront (like many lighter styled dry pinks) but adds on the extra qualities of a wine that will match well with sophisticated savory low-spiced foods (think Burgundian cheeses and patés.) This wine has abundant Pinot Noir character with creamy red fruits lurking in the background, yet finishing completely dry; it is a unique and impressive expression of sublime Burgundian culture.
3. Domaine De la Garniere Muscadet 2012 $9.99 Loire Valley
(100% Melon de Bourgogne varietal aka "muscadet grape" --low in alcohol 12% -as is typical in this Loire Valley appellation.)
Sometimes you just need a wine to chill out with, something good but uncomplicated, this bargain Muscadet does the trick. This is pure, clean, and refreshing. Ripe, fresh lemon flavors drive this wine, which finishes with a lively minerality. Ancient seabeds give a character to the soils here, and the fruit reflects this slight mineral-saltiness, producing wines that match well with bivalves.
4. Caves Jean Bourdy --Cotes du Jura Rouge A.O.C. 2008 $24.99 Jura Valley (between Burgundy and Switzerland)
(The grapes are Poulsard, Trousseau, and Pinot Noir --the producer is Demeter certified -Biodynamic Wine -with minimal sulfur addition at bottling.)
The three grape varieties are assembled in the same tank for a common fermentation for 12 to 15 days, with no added cultured yeast, they are then aged in large neutral wood foudres for four years in very cold cellars. They are bottled without filtration. M. Bourdy visited Portland last year for an epic tasting of his wines at E&R wine store, there were wines from as far back as 1934 that remained fresh and alive and expressive of the unique terroir of the Jura area. My point is that this wine can age and improve for decades, and will a wonderful addition to anyone's cellar, and it is a steal at the price. The wine is low in alcohol and color, with a fine edge of nervy acidity, and flavors reminiscent of a cool vintage Oregon Pinot Noir, but with a firmer structure and a drier finish. The wine is very versatile at the table. M. Bourdy recommends his wine be served with raclette, grilled poultry, white meat, red meat, small game, barbecue, and couscous pot-au-feu. Again this is an elegant, dry-styled wine that is made to be served with food.
5. Château Paret 2010 Côtes de Castillon $11.99 Bordeaux area
(The blend is 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc --with aging in stainless steel vats to maintain fresh aromatics.)
This wine hits the palate with Cassis-steeped flavors and a perfume offering up scents of black fruits, spring flowers, and crushed rocks. This has good concentration, full-bodied power, and beautifully integrated acidity and tannin. This bargain Bordeaux blend is from Castillon, which is near the town of St. Emilion across the river from the famous properties of the Medoc. It is nice to find an affordable Bordeaux of real character; this one will match well with smoked meats, and roast chicken, and bean casseroles.
6. Les Vins De Vienne -- St. Joseph A.O.C. "L'Arzelle" 1998 $24.99 Northern Rhone
(100% Syrah --single vineyard within the larger property with a unique terroir.)
This was produced as a collaboration between three wine makers -- Yves Cuilleron, Francois Villard and Pierre Gaillard, three superstar, Syrah-specialist vignerons in Rhone. At the Rhone’s most northern point in 1996, this trio purchased and rejuvenated the old vineyard of Seyssuel, located on the left bank of the Rhone, just fifteen miles from Lyon, north of Côte-Rôtie. Elegant and evolved, with good typical flavors for a northern Rhone, the wine offers lavender-inflected cold-climate Syrah flavors of licorice, and smoky herb nuance. This is a dry-styled wine to match with elegant cuisine that is low in spice. Don't overwhelm this aged beauty, but pair it with umami-driven foods like porcini pasta, or potted organ meats.
7. Domaine Berthoumieu Madiran Rouge A.O.C. 2009 "Cuvée de CHARLES DE BATZ" $21.99 Madiran is in Gascony in South West France
(90% Tannat - 10% Cabernet Sauvignon --vine age 50-100 years --one year in wood, half new.)
Didier Barre is one of the best producers in Madiran; his wine has dense dark Italian prune plum flavors, and a black almost impenetrable body. Madiran producers have learned to tame the large amount tannin that nature endows their wine with. Here the wine offers a big smooth ride: this is a great wine to match with barbecue.

“Now onto yet more Italians I adore, and a tasting I look forward to each time we do it as these are some of my personal favorite indulgences. And based on your enthusiastic attendance at past Barbera fests I know you appreciate them equally. I’ve had them all individually and can enthusiastically vouch for each one, and the thought of having them all together is, to put it mildly, rather intoxicating! There is no wine I reach for more at home than Barbera."
