October 2013 will be remembered as warm and wet. The last half of the month was chilly but the very warm temperatures during the first half tipped the scale for the above average monthly readings. For most of the month temperatures were above average and even record setting on the fourth and fifth. The high temperatures were warmer than normal. The average high was 62.58° which is 2.27° above average. The low temperatures for the month were also above average. The average low temperature was 43.58° which is 1.79° above average. The average temperature for the month, which includes both the highs and lows, was 53.08° which is 2.03° above average.
October was a very wet month with Grand Rapids observing 5.46 inches, which was 2.20 inches above average. Measurable precipitation occurred on sixteen of the thirty-one days. Grand Rapids even set a new daily rainfall record on the fifth. As the cool temperatures moved in during the last half of the month, the first flakes of snow arrived kicking off the winter season.
With all the rain, October was a cloudy month with 41.5% of possible sunshine. In a typical October we see 44% so that makes last month 2.5% below average.
