Numerous pet events occurred on Saturday, October 1st in and around Austin focusing on adoptions, raising awareness on the importance of spay/neuter surgeries and raising funds.
Whole Foods Market on 6th Street in downtown Austin hosted Critter Cafe. Foster pet parents associated with Town Lake Animal Center's Project Starfish Program had an opportunity to share their pet's personalities with future adopters. From 9 a.m. till noon cages were aligned with felines while canines walked around the area closest to 6th Street. This event will occur the first Saturday of each month till December 8, 2012.
The employees and pets at Town Lake Animal Center will be relocating to Austin Animal Center located at 7201 Levander Loop in Austin just five miles east of their present location. This new animal center will open in November 2011.
Barkitecture Designer Doghouse Auction and Pet Festival featured a silent auction of unique, one of a kind doghouses created by Austin’s best architects, designers, and builders. Proceeds benefitted local area animal rescue groups. This year's participating rescue groups were: Austin Boxer Rescue, Austin Greyhound Adoption, Cocker Spaniel Rescue of Austin, Emancipet, Humane Society of Williamson County, and Love-A-Bull,Inc. The event was held on 2nd Street in Austin.
At 8 a.m. this past Saturday the Pet Fest had a 5K run and at 9 a.m. the Fun Run began through San Marcos just south of Austin. Pet Fest is PALS’ (Pet Prevent A Litter of Central Texas) largest fundraiser of the year. In addition to generating donations, the purpose of the event was to generate public awareness for the needs of animals, promote responsible pet guardianship and celebrate the human-animal bond. From what I experienced, the event was a huge success.
Another huge successful event was Shadow Cats' Art Market held in Round Rock. The event included a silent auction of special artist donated items as well as general arts and crafts sale that didn't have to be cat oriented. All proceeds from the event will be used to care fo sick, injured and feline leukemia cats housed at the Shadow Cats sanctuary and to support locate TNR (Trap, Neuter and Return) efforts.
Did you have any opportunity to enjoy any of these events? Please share your adventures. These animal welfare groups continuously seek donations, volunteers, and foster homes. Visit their websites to view the various pets eager to join a family to live happily ever after.
