It's on every news channel, in every newspaper, can't miss it on the online news sources. "Obamacare" starts October1, but will 'everything' be ready?
It looks like a good portion of all this will be 'ready,' but not everything. The Federal exchange may or may not be. The Spanish language portion probably won't be. Covered California, California's exchange, may be missing some moving parts, so to speak, but is that catastrophic, is that going to be an issue?
It would be really easy to blast this--the exchanges, the web sites, the employees supposedly going to help people apply, the training and contracting of agents in California, shouldn't that all be in place? It's not all 100% set. But, in reality, it doesn't need to be ON October 1. Keep in mind, October 1 is only the start date of when people can apply for the 'new world' plans that go into effect January 1, 2014. This isn't going to keep any one from getting coverage right away because that's not the way this has been set up.
But it is frightening to me that the majority of people I talk to really don't understand what is going to be happening. We in the agent community have been immersed in this for so long, it's hard to believe not everyone is living, eating and breathing this stuff. So my advice to you is to connect with an independent agent to see what is going to work best for you, once we really get thing rolling.
You do NOT have to do anything on October 1, so mid October, early November, that's when you do need to really start thinking about it. The way you apply for health insurance, either in or out of the Exchange is going to change and it's not going back in the foreseeable future. This is a work in progress, once again, stay tuned....
