The United States of America came to fruition in the 'Age of Enlightenment'. Our founding fathers envisioned one nation, consisting of separate states, governed by elected citizens which would greatly deter a consolidated power-structure. Since our founding there have been many who gained power and wealth by following our founding principles yet spent a lifetime trying to destroy those founding principles for the rest of us. The 'American Dream' is attainable to those who earn it through individual achievement, if and only if, government doesn't constrict opportunity. Our founding fathers were well aware of the dangers of consolidated power and wealth in government - Big Government. They knew that power can corrupt elected government officials. They also knew that wealth, in the form of tax revenue would always corrupt those in power. Therefore, limited government mitigates the damage caused by corrupt government officials.
Fast-forward to present-day America. Our national debt is equal to or greater than our GDP yet we have politicians like Nancy Pelosi opining that government can't cut spending. Our Federal Government hasn't passed a budget in four years. The economy is stagnant, at best. If not for the artificial capital infusion by the Federal Reserve, which will end at some point, our economy would falter once again.
Approximately one-sixth of the American economy has been confiscated by the Federal Government. The Affordable Care Act, aka Obama Care became law because of procedural gimmicks, bribes, and kick-backs that would have landed anyone in the private sector in prison. The Supreme Court confirmed Obama Care's constitutionality by re-writing the government's own defense of the law which would have been grounds for removal from the bench in any other court. A principle author of Obama Care (Senator Baucus) has described the law in very plain terms - "Train Wreck". Maybe if our politicians would have read the law before they passed it, this "Train Wreck" could have been avoided. Even the President's most ardent supporters (Unions) have demanded enormous changes to the law or its complete repeal.
Our President doesn't believe in 'American Exceptionalism' and I think he would even admit it. Regardless, any Communist or Socialist state can impose its will on its people, nothing exceptional about it. Any two-bit Military Dictatorship or 'Banana Republic' can ration some semblance of health care to its people and call it quality health care. Many do and the progressive liberals buy it. Even our Canadian friends who have a first class nation and citizenry are burdened by a government 'Single Payer' health care system that provides little more than basic services - if you're willing to stand in line. Proof lies in American hospitals, where you will find Canada's most financially capable and government officials when they need health care.
The real tragedy will occur on October 1, 2013 and the subsequent days, months and years. If anyone wants to know why government is completely incapable of being the primary arbiter of health care in our nation, just watch the carnage that will ensue at hospitals and clinics across our great land. The vast majority of people who think they will benefit from Obama Care don't yet realize they will have to pay for it. However, not nearly as much as the rest of us will. See for yourself at www.healthcare.gov. Take a snap-shot of the cost of Obama Care on October 1, then again November 1, and every month thereafter and watch those costs soar. Don't worry, there is one constant in this whole charade. The President will always have an excuse for why Obama Care isn't working and why it costs so much but, as always, he will never have any solutions.
Limited government, freedom, personal liberty, opportunity, and upward mobility are still very new and audacious values for humans to live by. Unfortunately, many of our leaders in government don't share these same values.
