"He-e-e-e-e-e-e-ere's Johnny!"
On this date in 1962, a mild-mannered comedian from Nebraska named Johnny Carson took over as host of "The Tonight Show."
It began an alliance that was to last 30 years and make Carson a legend.
We were lucky enough to see Carson host the show on two occasions, which we remembered in a previous column.
DVD releases of Carson on "The Tonight Show" are plentiful and very enjoyable to watch. The best and the most comprehensive is "Heeere's Johnny - The Definitive DVD Collection from The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson," a 12 DVD set of highlight from shows arranged by various themes. The set also includes Carson's final appearances on the show.
Jay Leno and now Conan O'Brien have followed, but Carson will forever remain indelibly identified with the show.
As he should be.
