Many people around the country and the world will celebrate World Oceans Day on Saturday, June 7. The ocean is always fascinating to young children because of the size of the ocean that they might have an opportunity see while on a family vacation. Learning about the ocean is always a favorite theme during the summer in early childhood classrooms. Lessons about the ocean can be integrated into all areas of early education. Science activities can include making salt water to taste the ocean. A variety of shells can create a math activity by arranging the shells according to size. Language and reading skills can be integrated into lessons that the ocean can offer by learning new vocabulary that is associated with the ocean.

Sarasota has a unique attraction for learning about the ocean with its Mote Marine and Laboratory. World Oceans Day will be celebrated at Mote Marine on Saturday, June 7 from 10:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Games and crafts that teach about the ocean will be part of the educational activities. It is always a great idea to prepare a young child for an educational trip by choosing a fun read-aloud. "Out of the Ocean" by Debra Frasier is a great choice to prepare for celebrating World Oceans Day at Mote Marine and Laboratory. Debra grew up close to Vero Beach, Florida, and this appealing book is written from her perspective on being a child who lived close to the ocean. The little girl and her mother walk along the beach and gather treasures from the ocean. They about find all sorts of special things from articles that are very small to articles that are too big to carry. This book is of interest because the notes at the end of the book describe a beach environment. Debra also describes the life cycle of the sea turtle.
