Occupy Rose Parade 2013: Shinier ‘floats,’ fewer folks, & Rich ‘Uncle’ Pennybags (Photos)

Most of us can only dream of being as rich and recovering from catastrophe as quickly as Rich “Uncle” Pennybags of Monopoly. But there he was, mingling with the riff-raff in the traditional parade that follows the parade on Orange Grove and Colorado on Jan. 1, 2013.

Until last year, the folks who marched after the last unit were typically wielding bullhorns and holding signs that told parade-goers they were going to heck. After the 2012 Rose Parade, Occupiers mounted a huge demonstration with 1,000 or more participants, the highlights of which were a giant octopus “float” made of plastic sheeting and PVC pipe, and a giant replica of the preamble to the Constitution signed by flesh-and-blood people followed by a document titled “We the Corporations plastered with corporate logos.

The demonstration after the 2013 Rose Parade was much smaller and passed quickly. Armed law enforcement was not out in the overwhelming numbers of 2012, and white suiters generally ignored the shindig. In addition to Rich “Uncle” Pennybags, it included a…joker? sheikh?...that had the world on a spear tip, and the usual placards.

The photos tell the story. Enjoy.
