Off of 14th and Broadway solidarity honks echo near the Denver capitol building. On October 1, 2011, 8000 protesters marched across the Brooklyn Bridge in New York, 700 protesters were arrested. The Occupy Wall Street movement is quickly growing with protests in Seattle, Albuquerque, Boston, Los Angeles, and growing by the day.
The unique aspect of Occupy Denver is that they have the “People’s Kitchen,” ran by local chef Krunchy. The People’s Kitchen gives out free food to the homeless, protesters, police, and even people who oppose the movement.
“We appreciate the solidarity honks, the support, and all of the donations,” stated Mitch S., who drives down from Ft. Collins on the weekends to support Occupy Wall Street. Mitch explained how the Denver Police have been supportive of their movement to represent the “99%” and that Occupy Denver has not been harassed by anything other than random people yelling, “Get a job,” as they drive by.
Noam Chomsky recently stated that he supports the Occupy Wall Street movement by calling it courageous and necessary. Radio news host Alex Jones opposes the Occupy Wall Street movement calling it a “bankster” takeover by “socialist trained college students,” who are looking to make America communist. Author and activist Naomi Klein stated on October 6, 2011 that people are coming together because “they realize change is not going to come from the ballot box because the political process has been bought and paid for.”
The next scheduled Occupy Denver mass rally is Saturday October 8, 2011.
