Obstacles to Manny vs 'Money': weight, gloves, and more

WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao (50 - 3 - 2) has agreed to a March 13, 2010 super fight date with Floyd Mayweather, Jr (40 - 0), as conveyed by Pacquiao advisor Michael Koncz.

Weight and Gloves

1.  Two major obstacles remain in the proposed clash that pits the sport's former pound for pound king (Mayweather, Jr) against the current pound for pound king (Pacquiao).  Floyd Mayweather, Jr is insisting on a 154 pound junior middleweight limit, while Team Pacquiao is aiming for a 147 pound welterweight limit, according to Freddie Roach in an interview on Sky Sports.

2.  Additionally, according to World Boxing Organization (WBO) rules, 10 oz gloves must automatically be used for 154 lb. junior middleweight bouts.  The Mayweather camp wants to use 10 oz. gloves (otherwise called "pillows" in the industry) as opposed to the preferred 8 oz. ("puncher's") gloves of Manny Pacquiao, also as conveyed by Roach.  The WBO stipulates in Regulation # 30 that the harder-hitting 8 oz. gloves can only be used up to the 147 lb. welterweight limit, a rule aimed at protecting bigger fighters from magnified blows to the head.  Junior middleweight all the way up to heavyweight fights require 10 oz. gloves.

Pacquiao's last loss, which occurred in 2005 against Erik "El Terrible" Morales (first fight of the trilogy), caused controversy as a lack of contractual diligence led to the signing of the fight contract that stipulated the use of 10 oz gloves.  Team Pacquiao would later argue that the results of the first Morales fight would have been different had then-manager Murad Muhammad negotiated for Pacquiao to wear his normal 8 oz ("puncher's") gloves.

Concerns for Pacquiao Camp

The most Pacquiao has ever weighed for a fight was 144 lbs in his most recent bout with Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto.  The Filipino weighed in at 142 lbs against Oscar de la Hoya in December 2008.

Date Weight Limit Opponent Outcome
 Nov 14, 2009  145 pounds - Welterweight  Miguel Cotto  W - TKO 12
 May 2, 2009  140 pounds - Jr Welterweight  Ricky Hatton  W - KO 2
 Dec 6, 2008  145 pounds - Welterweight  Oscar de la Hoya  W - RTD 8
 Jun 28, 2008  135 pounds - Lightweight  David Diaz  W - TKO 9
 Mar 15, 2008  130 pounds - Super Featherweight  Juan Manuel Marquez  W - SD 12
 Oct 6, 2007  130 pounds - Super Featherweight  Marco Antonio Barrera  W - UD 12

Floyd Mayweather, Jr has stepped in the scales in excess of the contracted weight limit in his last fight against lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez.  He weighed in two pounds over the 144 lb catchweight with the Mexican in September 2009.

 Nov 19, 2005  145.25 pounds - Welterweight  Sharmba Mitchel  W - TKO 6

A second concern for the Pacquiao camp will be additional terms that may be sought after by Team Mayweather.  As Arum seeks to close a deal by requesting both a 147 lb weight limit and 8 oz gloves, Floyd and his advisors will in turn seek concessions.  These include the possibility of entering the ring last (although Manny Pacquiao will be defending his WBO welterweight belt), or a slightly higher purse split over the Filipino.

Finally, trainer Freddie Roach had earlier advocated a May or late 2010 fight in order to accomodate the healing of Manny's broken right ear drum as well as to secure a longer than usual 12-week training camp.  Pacquiao also suffered a broken right hand from his victory over Cotto on November 14.

Final Thoughts:  Golden Boy Promotions' (GBP) Richard Schaefer is currently representing Floyd Mayweather, Jr's interests in negotiating a (possible) Manny Pacquiao super fight.  We recall the debacle of 2006, when Manny signed contractual documents with GBP's Oscar de la Hoya.  This action resulted in a legal dispute and eventual out-of-court settlement between Top Rank (Pacquiao's current promoter) and GBP.  As part of the settlement, GBP gets a sizeable cut out of the Filipino's earnings per fight.  With a looming Pacquiao vs Mayweather showdown, presumably GBP stands to make millions of dollars from such an event.

Floyd's camp, however, is insisting on a 154 lb junior middleweight limit as well as 10 oz gloves.  GBP is incentivized each time "Mega Manny" fights.  In this instance, acting on behalf of Team Mayweather, GBP is now negotiating terms that can hurt the Filipino star.  Unequivocally, this is immoral and deplorable.  Boxing has ways to go in passing and implementing rules that ensure that fighters who retain and compensate representatives act solely on behalf of that fighter's best interests - and not dip their hands in two cookie jars. Worse, that representative is working for that client's opponent, and possibly negotiating prejudicial provisions that can hasten the downfall of that client (i.e., unoptimal weight limits and glove sizes).

In the advisory business, the one client one representative model rules.  In certain states, it is the law.  You know whose team you play for - or you can face civil and / or criminal charges.  Prize fighting can be improved and professionalized.  Certainly, GBP has played a role in elevating the quality of services for its boxer clients; among others, Oscar de la Hoya's organization brings experience in assessing market value to determine financial arrangements, dynamic promotional channels and synergistic partnerships, as well as, coaching fighters on investment and tax considerations.

Richard Schaefer, CEO of GBP, is an astute businessman who came from the ranks of investment bank UBS.  I know a little about this industry, having served a senior role in mergers and acquisitions (M&A) in Houston.  While the peculiarities of local law may not be involved, greater restraint and respect can be exercised in accordance with good judgment and ethical conduct.  When taking a multi-million dollar check from one of your fighters, you do not turn around and try to ensure that very same boxer loses his next bout, by negotiating prejudicial terms on behalf of his next opponent.  Upon review of GBP's website, Manny Pacquiao is clearly listed as one of their fighters.  (Link

Floyd Jr. is crazy of insisting to fight Pacquiao at 154lbs. Pacquiao is not a middleweight fighter Floyd jr. knows it. Floyd Jr. is seeking to his advantage because he not sure of fighting Pacquiao. The terms should come from Pacquiao and Pacquiao camp not from Floyd Jr.

  • Chicago guy 2 years ago

Excuses and alibis which are not acceptable indicates that Floyd Jr. is scared of Pacquiao. Insisting the March 13 is Floyd Jr. idea if Pacquiao will accept the fight, now Pacquiao agreed Floyd jr. is now looking such demand which is not acceptable at 154lbs fight.

  • Jersey Joe 2 years ago

Wow! If this is true, then PBF is indirectly acknowledging that he is indeed scared of Pacquiao's power. Why else would he ask for 10 oz.gloves? Also, what's up with the 154 lb limit? Pacquiao is a Welterweight champion, not a Middleweight one. If Mayweather wants to fight at 154, why not move to that division and fight Paul Williams?

  • JoeyGonzo 2 years ago

Pac and EM DID NOT FIGHT ON 10 oz gloves.
    Jeesh, get your facts right.
They used the 8-oz Winning gloves. It's known as pillow gloves b/c the padding is pure foam and thick.

this gayweather sucks!154 lbs.? a 10 oz gloves? this man is yellow...

Well put Marv. About time to expose the ugly side of double faced Gold Boy Promotions/Oscar Dela Hoya. How much greedy and sinister one can get about money. GBP/ODLH and "money" Mayweather is a perfect team in HELL! The other side of the coin is, the Angel Pacquiao is going to destroy them and kick their stinking butts to where they belong!

  • albert 2 years ago

it shows that "money floyd jr" is scared of pacquiao period!!!!

  • FloydFan 2 years ago

What I don't understand is when you write this nonsense as facts. Cherry picking facts is something you Filippinos are good at. Floyd fought all his opponents at the welterweight limit beside JMM. But between 140-147 there is no difference they are all welterweights. Manny was preparing to fight Yuri Foreman at 154 to get his title bc'se he knows that thee would be no competition and now why not fight Floyd at that weight. Floyd is simply calling Freddie's and Manny's bluff. I tottaly disagree with your selective way of presenting "your" facts. Floyd will give Manny a box lesson and you all will be calling him names again. You guys always have excuses.

  • Pol Canonce Barugo, Leyte PH 1 year ago

You really mislead yourself floydfan! Your selective imprudent and idiotic reasoning makes no sense at all. Why not Manny Pacquiao fight Floyd at 154? Oh yeah, see their physical difference? Why can't Floyd fight Manny at 147 when you are saying Floyd fought Marquez who has the same physical stature with Manny Pacquiao? So why do you think Floyd is insisting that foolishness? He agreed fighting Marquez at 144 and Manny is asking him to fight at 147 then all of a sudden he will insist at 154? Where is your logic at your foot or at your anus?

  • xtian 2 years ago

154 weight limit and 10 ounce gloves are PBF's ways to duck Manny. He doesn't really want to fight Manny. The fight is yet to be done but PBF has already excuses. Why would he want to fight Manny at 154? Manny is having a hard time making 147 and PBF is a natural 147 pounder then suddenly he wants the fight at 154? What a ducker. This fight is not gonna happen because PBF doesn't want to fight Manny. He's giving him a deal that he knows Manny will not take then he'll say that Manny is scared to fight him. Too early for excuses. PBF's a looser.

  • unyok 2 years ago

mayweather will do everything to put things in his advantage.even with his last fight he was over the weight limit and refused to be weighed before the fight so nobody knows how big he is when he fought poor little marquez.COWARD!

  • boxingfan 2 years ago

mayweather is talking sh!t again. 154lbs! why? because manny pacquiao can barely make 147lbs and he gains an advantage. What a pu$&y! Dont believe he will fight pacman on even terms. tsk
I hope you people realize what mayweather is doing. In my opinion if mayweather tries to price or fail to negotiate then pac should just fight shane or even paul william than agree to these outrageous terms

  • JoeyGonzo 2 years ago

Floydfan, at 154, Pac will have no choice but to wear 10 oz gloves.
Fraud cheated JMM on the scale and made him wear 10 oz gloves.
    He's a bitch.
Fraud fought Oscar at jr middle, would he fight Paul W at jr middle?

  • unyok 2 years ago

SHUT UP FLOYDFAN!everybody knows mayweather is a coward!did you see his interview in ESPN?what a f...kin idiot.

  • richard 2 years ago

OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!i told you guys, maygayweather is really scared of MANNY PACQUIOA!!!dis is ridiculous!!!154 lbs? hahahaha...all speculations are now answered, everything esp his recent fight with JMM.gayweather agreed for that 145 lbs against JMM,now he is turning his back at 147? JeeeeeeeeeeZZZ!!!now,if you want 154,go and fight those who are in middleweight like paul williams, yuri foreman,etc...and you can waer the proper gloves at 10oz.this gayweather is really coward~~~~~~~~~~~~~~!!!!!

  • FloydFan 2 years ago

This article is a pure and simple lie. I just read that Bob Arum said that the fight will be at 147 welterweight limit.

  • albert 2 years ago

me too! i want to fight "money floyd jr" at any scale!!!!

  • threestarsandasun 2 years ago

thats delaying tactic for mayweather. 154 that's insane... its like ur kissing ur life goodbye.. mayweather knows that pacman can't beat him at that weight class.. common floyd... fight him at 147 lbs if you really wan't to fight PACMAN...

Mayweather's camp demands the 154lbs weight limits for their advantage. If Pacquiao agress this limit, he is in hell during the fight. If Manny likes to have the 147 lbs weight limit still that is Floyd;s advantage because Floyd is always overweight as the agreed weight. The 144 lbs catch weight is good to both Manny and Floyd, but I am sure what ever weight limit is to be agrees, Floyd never to comly. He is alwyas overweight. He is a big "SHAME" of boxing sport.

If you are correct and Floyd “Quack” M ducks Pacquiao or the other legit welterweights again, then all legit welterweights should just ignore any future fight with Quack. Quack doesn’t represent any belt …he has been trash talking all the legit welterweights and yet avoiding them. The final travesty is that Floyd “Quack” M has been letting all legit welterweight duke it out without him. Mosely, Berto, Cotto, Williams, Pacquiao should just ignore F “Quack” M for any future fight. Let him pay for all the duckings he has done…go against Pacquiao instead. A fight against Pacquiao will get the same millions as a fight with Floyd “Quack” M (except Pacquiao will beat you guys badly). And this action will put an end to F “Quack” M’s destiny. QUACK, QUACK, QUACK Floyd!!!

    PAC SONG TO FLOYD
They asked you if you’ll fight me
And you choked on your reply
I’d rather Arum deal with you
Than mislead you with a lie
And who am I to judge you,
On what you say or do
    The fans are now beginning
    To see the real you..
    And someday when we tats
My LEFT will be too much
That you have to close your eyes
    Where do you hide?
I wanna pound you til you’re white
‘Til your face breaks down and cry
    I wanna beat you
‘Til you dream and say, goodnight.
You think you are a strategist
That you can insult my pride
    But through your insecurities
    You’re ZERO loss seemed right
    You’re just another fighter
So far from what is true
    An overrated boxer
    Who never gives his due

    And someday when we tats
My RIGHT will be too much
That you have to close your eyes
    Where do you hide?
I wanna pound you til you’re white
‘Til your face breaks down and cry
    I wanna beat you
‘Til you dream and say, goodnight.

At times I’d like to break you
And drive you to your knees

for weight and gloves, i don't think the pac camp will give in with duck's demands, else the pac would be crucified by his filipino fans for being stupid... personally, pac's camp will be in a tight spot due to the pac's filing of candidacy in congress... this is very telling with all the recent press releases made by bob arum and freddie roach... it all points to the obvious problem, i.e., distractions, distractions, and distractions...
