Obsession as defined by the Encarta dictionary means uncontrollable persistence of idea. This is not to be confused with the word passion. It is very different. Passion means intense emotion. The dissimilarity is reflective in the sense of who’s in control, either you control your feelings (passion) or they control you (obsession).
As paraphrased below, Ehow.com communicates steps for overcoming an obsession (and you should want to overcome it, it’s unhealthy):
- Start by confirming if you are indeed obsessed with someone or something. Does it overpower your thoughts in most every waking moment?
- If so, you must own up to its unhealthy hold and harness the desire to move beyond it.
- Break its hold by implementing healthy distractions, things that take your obsession off of your mind and out of your reach.
- Practice a routine of these distractions. It takes time.
- Step outside of yourself for a different perspective (see it through an unbiased view) as if you’re talking to a friend who is in your shoes.
- Forgive yourself for becoming obsessed. You are human.
If you keep your guard up and remind yourself that it is in your best interest to let go of your obsession, you will conquer this.
Let it go and leave it in your past. Practice living with love and passion as this creates positive energy; it is 2-sided and offers balance!
