As you may be aware, the practice of yoga tunes us into the rhythms of the planet and into nuanced energies that we may not readily realize. The noise of our daily lives and the general tuning out of these prompts that seems to develop as we get older, have a knack of dampening this awareness.
As we head into the fall season, this seems a good time to review the symbiosis of yoga and the season.
As the bounty of summer is reaped and we prepare to share these gifts with our families into the holidays, assess the spiritual bounties that you have gathered and fostered throughout the year. What of your goals came to fruition? What are you most proud of and feel was served well by your hard work? Look back and take stock as to what puts the biggest smile on your face of your achievements this year.
Perform your own year in review to the occurrences of the year thus far. Have you accomplished what you intended? Have you shifted any habits that you planned to adjust at the beginning of the year? If you are not quite there yet, are you aware of the blocks and what is in your control in order for you to initiate that shift?
Summer is about surya (sun energy), which brings with it heat, agitation, and the more masculine aspects. As the milder temperatures settle in and the shorter days begin to materialize, they prepare us for the hibernation of winter. If this year hasn’t brought all you wanted, allow yourself to take a moment and, instead of scrutinizing yourself or your efforts, stop and regroup. If you have had a few wins, take the time to pat yourself on the back for what you have accomplished and not continue striving for the next thing.
Preparation for dormancy
In the animal kingdom, winter is a time of hibernation. This applies to humans, as well. In us two legged animals, this translates to staying closer to home, reducing outings, as the darker days prevail and the colder temperatures settle in. Fall is the pre-game preparation of the quiet to come. Use this time to look within and observe what aspects of yourself can best be served by the upcoming quiet time. Do you need a spiritual realignment? Are you more in need of a battle plan for your work or finances? Are there family issues that would benefit from focus on your end?
Most of all, in case you have forgotten, remember to enjoy as much of every moment as possible, observe and learn what you can, be thankful for what you have, and know that you can change a situation that does not serve.
