Obie the obese Dachshund celebrates ownership dispute (Photos)

There’s reason for Obie, the world’s fattest Dachshund, to celebrate—but it won’t be with more treats. There’s a big party in Oregon on Saturday after the ownership of the dog was settled out of court in Washington County on Friday.

Nora Vanatta will keep the fat dog after reaching a settlement with Oregon Dachshund Rescue. Nora took in the 77-pound fatty from its previous owner, an elderly couple, when the Rescue was seeking a good home.

Nora documented the dog’s diet and weight loss journey and Obie became an Internet inspiration. Donations came in to help with Obie’s care, and the Rescue thought Nora was exploiting the dog for her own financial benefits. Even though Nora had expertise in the dieting process, the Rescue wanted to take custody back of Obie.

The Facebook page has more than 82,000 fans, and Obie is down to 49 pounds.
He is a “magical dog” as Nora describes, and she chronicles his progress with photos and weight posts. Obie will soon get skin reduction surgery.

The dog just wouldn’t stop eating after being cared for by a Marysville, Washington couple. One family member contacted the Rescue when they noticed the dog’s weight issues. One of the problems is that the dog ate only people food.

Now Obie is on a strict high protein, high-fiber diet.

In her latest Internet post, (on http://www.facebook.com/BiggestLoserDoxieEdition) Nora writes:

Obie is ready to get out and celebrate!! Our meet and greet is planned for tomorrow afternoon around 3pm at Lucky Lab Brewery. There is a large outdoor covered area. I will bring Obie and his brothers. Looking forward to meeting our local supporters. The rest of you, have a virtual drink with us tomorrow. Thank you!
I will have calendars on hand to sell for $20.
