After a year on a diet and lots of love from strangers through Facebook, (see: https://www.facebook.com/BiggestLoserDoxieEdition) Obie the world's fattest Dachshund has lost more than half of her weight.
A year ago, the elderly couple she was living with let her balloon to 77 pounds and he could hardly walk. The owners couldn't keep her and a neighbor in the Portland area took the dog in.
Nora Vanatta, with the help of many experts, fed and exercised Obie to bring him to an optimal weight of a five-year-old dog.
The dog lost 52 pounds and is almost exactly the ideal weight of a standard breed of a Dachshund at 25 pounds. There was surgery to remove excess skin and a prescription diet food.
Next month, Obie will go on a U.S. tour to help promote obesity prevention.
