If you love me, obey my commandments.” (John 14:15)
Unfortunately, too many Christians look at the concept of obedience in its simplest form. Obeying commandments as set forth in His Word. In other words, if we obey in this sense, we avoid sinning, and God is pleased. But obedience is so much more than that. It is listening to God, seeking His weill for your life, hearing and obeying the promptings of the Holy Spirit, surrendering your will to His will. It is said well in Isaiah 50:4:
morning by morning He wakens me and opens my understanding to His will
And of course in Proverbs 3:5-6:
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge Him, and he will make your paths straight”
Our lives are about fulfilling God’s purpose. When we are living in the center of God’s will – in obedience – we live a life that brings honor and glory to God.
Obey God with deep reverence and fear. For God is working in you, giving you the desire and power to do what pleases Him” (Phil 2:12-13)
