The Obamas have a new dog. Bo has found a friend, and her name is Sunny. Another Portuguese Water Dog -- this one a female -- is joining the Obama family at the White House, reports ABC15 on Tuesday, Aug. 20.
Malia Obama has pet allergies, and Portuguese Water Dogs are known for their hypoallergenic fur, making them the top choice for humans allergic to dogs. Since, apparently, Malia and Bo have been living happily together in the White House for more than four years, there should not be a problem introducing this new member of the First Family.
Sunny hails from Michigan, and she is already more than a year old, which should be a help with the fancy furniture and carpeting. Sunny has already cut her puppy teeth and learned her way around. The White House website describes her as "full of energy and very affectionate," with a "cheerful personality."
It will be simple for long-range photographers to tell the dogs apart, since Sunny’s coat is all black, while Bo has splashes of white on his chest and his feet. And right now, Sunny is the owner of a pink flamingo dog toy. But that ownership could change. Pet watchers, stay tuned.
The Obamas made a donation to the Washington Humane Society in Sunny’s honor. She will be seen in many photographs to come.
