CNN aired a speech given by President Barack Obama where he poked fun at Fox News while challenging the people who watch that cable news channel to "go on the website, see what the prices are, see for yourself what the choices are, and make up their own minds ... I promise you if you go on the website and it turns out you're gonna save $100, $200, $300 per month on your insurance ... even if you didn't vote for me, I'll bet you sign up for that healthcare plan."
Fox news is the #1 News Channel with a wide audience base, although it's core audience primarily holds Conservative beliefs, many of whom are Catholic, Mormon, or Christian like myself; therefore, I thought that I for one would like to take Obama's challenge and put his predictions to the test because it sure would be nice to save at least $100 on our monthly premiums.
My wife and I live month to month like most people, and as a licensed health insurance agent, these changes also affect my ability to earn a living. (See: The plight of healthcare agents - who is reporting?)
Now I'm fairly certain that when Obama made those remarks, there was no public website for consumers to compare plans and prices; however, California has since created and published CoveredCA.com where residents can:
1) Enter basic demographic information
2) Discover if they qualify for financial assistance in purchasing a plan
3) Learn which plans are available for purchase
4) Educate themselves on the benefits of each plan
5) Compare prices
If you watch the attached 6 minute video you will see Obama on CNN, my subsequent step-by-step usage of Covered California's online tool to help determine potential insurance cost savings in 2014, the comparison of that result to the IRS penalty if my wife and I do not purchase health insurance through the Marketplace, and finally hear me "make up my own mind."
Although we live in the San Diego area, and rates vary geographically, as well as by age, income, and tobacco use, hopefully you will find this video both informative and helpful.
