The Obamacare navigators are beginning their work. They want to sign up as many people as possible for mandatory health plans by January 1. They are known to be poorly organized and may not understand Obamacare.
The problem with Obamacare is that it hurts the people Democrats say they want to help. It hurts young lower income people. Those who are older and politically conservative may be mildly disappointed by Obamacare but they probably won't suffer much from it.
But the young will take some big hits.
Lets say you are a young man or woman and you are struggling in the job market. You need that first job. Good luck. Many companies, even large established companies won't hire a young person on a fulltime basis because they don't want to provide health insurance to new hires. They will hire people on a part time basis.
So you are young and getting into the workforce. You go and apply for a job. You are hire, on a part time basis. You are making around minimum wage and you can't get more than 29 hours a week. This is because at 30 hours a week, your employer must either offer you health insurance or pay a $2,000 fine. To get more hours, you will have to find one or two additional jobs. So much for free time.
Your employer won't give you health insurance. So you either buy it yourself or pay a fine. Buying it yourself means a huge hit to your very meager paycheck. Insurance companies won't get you the same discounts they would a large company. And they may not have much interest in participating in the exchanges. Since you can't afford health insurance, you must pay a fine to the federal government.
And what if you get sick or hurt. Then you must pay out of pocket for medical care. If you are young and athletic, maybe sickness and injury is the farthest thing from your mind. But if you get hurt playing basketball or touch football, then you will be hit with a huge medical bill. Many young people will face tough times because of Obamacare.
