Obamacare is now live as of October 1st 2013. Now getting health insurance is as easy as going to www.healthcare.gov or calling a toll free number 1800 318-2593. This is the dawning of a new era though many Americans are unhappy (according to Gallup) because of what it would cost and how it will change America as we know it.
Unlike programs like the UK's NHS (National Health System) or Canada's Medicare system, Obamacare is NOT socialized medicine. It is merely a regulation on the way insurance companies operate. But this is what angers many Americans. Controlling and regulating large insurance companies seems so un-American. It is a government intervention of the free market. This can end up costing America in the long run.
For instance, now every American is required by law to be insured. In the past, this was only required of people who owned driver licenses and owned cars. But now, even people who only go to alternative health practitioners will be required to have health insurance. Nothing weakens a person's faith in the magical world more than a safety net that protects the down side. And Obamacare makes it easy.
Now uninsured Americans who are eligible can get insurance for less than 100 dollars a month. If that is too high for a person's budget, he or she can be eligible for free coverage. More Americans are upset about this legal requirement for individuals to be insured in Obamacare than any other part of the Affordable Healthcare Act.
In the past, insurance companies had the ability to give coverage agreements with pages and pages of long verbose legalese and lots of fine print. No more. Obamacare is requiring insurance companies to put all the benefits and coverage within a one page summery. This curtails the insurance companies from freely deceiving their clients so that they could increase their profits.
And what is worse is that insurance companies have lost the freedom to charge women more than men for the same coverage. Insurance companies were happy when they were able to charge a 22 year old woman 50 percent more for the same coverage given to a 22 year old man. Now the health insurance companies are outraged and many Americans are also outraged at this injustice being doled out to the insurance companies.
You pay insurance companies' their premiums. You have a right to feel that you are helping the American GDP by allowing insurance companies to have as much of your premium to go towards marketing costs and CEO pay and other overheads. But Obamacare says that only 20 percent of your premium can go towards an insurance company's overhead. You are now being denied the right to help the insurance company's CEO from being paid a huge income. People should be protesting in the streets.
And the young can now scrounge off their Parents' health insurance plan until they are age 26. When will our children learn that the only health insurance worth having is when you have earned it through hard work and sacrifice? Oh! Children, by that time you would have had so many health ailments, you would have really appreciated it. Obama, what have you done?
The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office claims that Obamacare will save the country money over the next decade, but this can end up costing America its pride for being the only developed country in the world that didn't have healthcare for all its citizens. It is a slap on the face and a government pick-pocketing of that great American tradition - the health insurance company. Where is the gratitude?
Insurance companies have always had the ability to take advantage of the ones most in need. After all, for many people in America, that is what America is all about. If a profit is to be made, why not? So they were able to increase premiums on people who regularly got sick and those who were getting increasingly older. They had the ability to shrink coverage (and thereby reduce their pay outs) during a client's lifetime. This “bait and switch” policy was a way to maintain ever increasing revenue streams from customers and many American's were happy to comply. But Obamacare is no longer going to let insurance companies take advantage in these ways any longer. What a disservice to the American people who want to live and participate in a free capitalistic economy.
Under this drastic health plan, doctors are unable to refuse you because they dislike your insurance plan. This is because it will get harder to discriminate against insurance plans since they all have the same minimum regulations as to what they have to cover.
Now insurance companies are required to take care of women wellness visits, mammograms, and child immunization. Now every child can be immunized from terrible infecting life threatening diseases with no extra co-pays and fees. Now we've reached a new era in America, the era of Obamacare – but at what cost to the health insurance companies? Will American capitalism ever be the same?
