President Barack Obama announced that he wants to dramatically lower the cost of a college education.
It will be interesting to see how he accomplishes this goal. In Florida, one can earn a bachelor's degree for a little more than $10,000 by using community colleges, now known as state colleges or participating in the two plus two program. A state college courses costs around $300 and a two year or Associate of Arts degree costs around $6,000 to earn. A growing number of state colleges offer Bachelor of Arts degrees and this would cost around $6,000 more. People can graduate with an AA degree and go to one of Florida's universities and pay around $7,000 for their final two years of education. Of course a student on a scholarship could pay even less, perhaps nothing.
But is this what people really want from college? Many students want more social opportunities and big time athletics. And all this costs money, lots of money. Also there are many legacy costs associated with college. So it will be interesting to see how this request from the president plays out.
