Today, President Obama took a prudent step in asking Congress to schedule a debate about taking military action against Syria for that government’s use of chemical and biological weapons against its own people.
He said that he is ready to act as commander in chief and that he has the authority to do so without Congressional approval. He said that America will go forward without the United Nations because that body has done nothing to intervene in the crisis in Syria in which international agreement has been violated by the Bashar al-Assad government.
President Obama said that the cost of doing nothing is too great, as he noted that Syria’s being armed with chemical and biological weapons is a danger not only to Syrians, but to neighboring nations including U.S. allies.
98% of world leaders oppose the use of chemical and biological weapons and therefore America cannot afford to allow a world with leaders and nations who have used chemical and biological weapons who against their own citizens.
President Obama has demonstrated a “willingness to lead,” and that will likely result in a direct strike at the forces that protect President Assad and perhaps the Syrian leader himself.
Driving Assad from office is a clear aim.
