After President Barack Obama got off Air Force One aircraft in Arizona yesterday, he was greeted by Arizona Governor Jan Brewer (R). Brewer handed the president a letter and had an abrupt verbal exchange with the president regarding her book, ‘Scorpions for Breakfast’ in which Brewer criticizes the president regarding a meeting the two had at the White House in the past. Brewer wrote that Obama was lecturing and talking down to her regarding the immigration laws in Arizona.
During the exchange on the tarmac of Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport , media persons who were present say the two were talking over each other. At one point, Brewer pointed her finger in the president’s face, and Obama walked off in Brewer's mid-sentence.
The opinions regarding the situation have gone viral. While many think Brewer was unprofessional and disrespectful to Obama, many believe that Obama is being too touchy, 'thin skinned' regarding criticisms he has received. The criticism at the crux of this conversation had to do with what Brewer had written about Obama in her book.
A day after the incident, Arizona’s Senator John McCain (R) went public with his support of Brewer regarding the tiff between Obama and Brewer. McCain said that Obama is abrasive in his conduct with fellow-politicians and others. In an interview with Don Imus, John McCain said:
Apparently Bobby Jindal, the governor of Louisiana, had a similar exchange with the president. It is very well-known he has a prickly personality, and I think it has been displayed in both of those cases.
UPDATE: Brewer continued to explain her actions on Thursday by saying of Obama:
He was offended about how I portrayed him in my book. And I was taken aback. And I wasn't going to back down, obviously. I mean, I stand by what I wrote. And it was the truth, and we just seem to have to agree to disagree, I said, on immigration.
