Obama vision intersects with American vision

The Washington Post leads with a headline, “Obama lays out liberal vision: He urges new commitment to equality, opportunity.” Well, the characterization that the things he spoke about in his 2nd inauguration speech are “liberal” is simply wrong. The reason is that Obama’s ideas and priorities represent an alignment with people’s needs, desires, and expectations.

The notion that pursuing equality for all people is somehow a liberal bent is inaccurate. It is our Constitution and Bill of Rights in action, business as usual. What is out of step and anti-American are those who oppose equality for all.

The notion that there is no room for poverty in America and that all people are entitled to a good life with all of the basics covered, including healthcare, is not a point off the liberal mark, it is dead center.

Therefore, as Republican lawmakers return to work today, I hope they come in good constitution and cloaked in the values of the American system in pursuit of a better life for all.

Balancing budgets, controlling spending, paying down debt and fixing our actuarial problem are all challenging work, although it is well within the category of doable when both parties put their mind to getting the job done.
