Michelle Obama is traveling to attend the funeral of a teen in Chicago. Obama is attending the funeral for Hadiya Pendleton, a 15-year-old who was gunned down last week in a park. According to a report from Thursday (Feb. 7), it will take place on Saturday (Feb. 9). She will be traveling with Senior Adviser Valerie Jarrett as well as Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. All three lived in Chicago before moving to Washington.
Speaking for the first lady, communication director Kristina Schake stated that, "As a mother and Chicagoan, the first lady was heartbroken to learn of the tragic loss of Hadiya Pendleton due to senseless gun violence." Pendleton was an honor student and a band majorette at King College Prep. and had actually participated in inaugural festivities near Washington just a week before her death.
Pendleton was killed on Jan. 29 in Harsh Park. That's less than a mile from where the Obama family's Kenwood home is located. There have been no arrests in the teen's death and a $40,000 reward has been issued for information that leads to an arrest in this case. Her death also underscores the violence that has been prevalent in Chicago lately, as January revealed itself to be the deadliest for the city in 10 years.
