Obama threatens Turkey to change course

The Obama administration is today denying reports that the President has personally threatened Turkey's leader to change course in policy or that the United States will no longer sell weapons to Turkey. Obama warned Turkey over their change in policy towards Israel, and is also very unhappy that Turkey voted against the USA on Iran sanctions at the UN.

Turkey actually wants to purchase weapons from the United States to use against Kurdish people inside Iraq after the US leaves, which is an issue unto itself above and beyond any spat with Israel or support for Iran at the UN. We should not be selling such weaponry to Turkey even if they make amends with Israel and stop their support of Iran, if we know it's their intent to use them to massacre Kurds in Iraq.

We have to applaud this move by President Obama, even if his spokespeople are publicly denying it. Turkey will have to weigh the consequences of aligning themselves with Iran at the expense of their relationship with the United States.

Thank you stephen schoenfeld you finally get it. It seems that the Kurdish cause is only brought up in retaliation to Turkeys hardline against Israel and support for Iran. but you put it well, that we shouldnt be selling weapons to Turkey even if they support Israel. I have read recent articles after the deadly flotilla raid and majority of the newspapers compare the kurdish cause not to the Palistinian struglle but to hammas.
