SYRIA – President Barack Obama released a written statement on Thursday asking Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad to resign condemning him for “slaughtering his own people" during pro-democracy protests who have been killed by the Syrian government's regime.
“The future of Syria must be determined by its people, but President Bashar al-Assad is standing in their way,” Obama said. “His calls for dialogue and reform have rung hollow while he is imprisoning, torturing, and slaughtering his own people. We have consistently said that President Assad must lead a democratic transition or get out of the way. He has not led. For the sake of the Syrian people, the time has come for President Assad to step aside.”
As the Syrian army continues to target innocent women and children and peaceful demonstrators, Obama spoke of the “disgraceful attacks” on civilians saying al-Asaad’s government, now been condemned by a United Nations investigation, could now only “look only to Iran for support for its brutal and unjust crackdown.”
CNN’s Anderson Cooper who has consistently exposed al-Assad’s “Reign of Terror” over the last six months on his AC360 telecast recently reported how Syrians risked their lives to give him pictures of a 2-year-old Syrian girl who was shot dead in the streets of Syria by al-Asaad’s regime. While Cooper said it was difficult to show such a graphic picture, he said it was important to show the picture since so many risked their lives to get the picture to him.
