Pres. Barack Obama made a short 15 minute address to the American people Sept 10 asking Congress to postpone a vote on military action and announcing the decision to surrender his ‘red line’ on chemical weapons use in Syria by Pres. Bashar al-Assad; a decision couched under the veil of an agreement whereby Pres. Assad is supposed to turn over control of all chemical weapon stockpiles to the UN; which in reality will be Russian control.
Since the Russian brokered deal on Syrian chemical weapons first surfaced in news media on Sept 9, Assad’s forces resumed offensive operations against rebels in Damascus with heavy bombardment by both tactical aircraft and artillery on rebel positions throughout the city.
Pres. Obama is thought to have discussed the deal with Pres. Vladimir Putin during the G20 Conference in Russia. Shortly after the summit concluded the Russian Navy began dispatching several amphibious assault ships into the eastern Mediterranean accompanied by one Russian warship and one Russian electronic intelligence gathering 'spy' ship.
There are conflicting accounts as to whether Obama actually discussed the deal with Putin during the G20 or if it was the unintended result of a gaffe made by Sec. of State John Kerry at a press conference. However, the dispatch of Russian landing ships commenced prior to Mr. Kerry’s gaffe.
It is unclear what the Russian Ropucha Class landing ships may be carrying; the vessels normally carry tanks and accompanying support infantry. The number of ships suggests a sizable force which could be Russian Spetsnaz units such as those which along with French Special Forces handled the transfer of as yet unknown materials from Iraq to Syria as US troops invaded Iraq in Mar 2003.
Pres. Obama originally made his ‘red line’ stipulation on chemical weapons use during the 2012 presidential campaign as a ‘throw away’ line apparently never anticipating he would have to enforce it. However, the leaders of Britain, France and Turkey took the President seriously.
When news broke of the chemical attack in Damascus on Aug 21, all three nations began mobilizing for military intervention and British Prime Minister David Cameron called a vote in Parliament to authorize use of force; a vote which Cameron was defeated on.
The simple fact of the matter however is that Pres. Obama has never displayed or taken any action to indicate seriousness about preventing or punishing WMD use in Syria. After the Aug 21 chemical attack he then needed an ‘escape hatch’ to get out of his ‘red line’ statement and the feigned surrender of control of chemical weapons by the Assad regime provides it.
Pres. Bashar al-Assad is aligned with both Hezbollah and Iran who have both intervened in Syria with ground troops in support of Assad. The main focus of the Obama administration in the Middle East is and remains forcing Israel to withdraw to the 1949 borders; turning over military control of the West Bank & Jerusalem to the Palestinian Authority and that of the Golan Heights back to the Assad regime.
It is to that end, which dictates any and all actions Pres. Obama takes in the Middle East and he needs Hezbollah's many thousands of rockets to put to threaten Israel. Without Pres. Assad in charge of Syria, Hezbollah cannot survive as a threat to Israel. With the failure of the Muslim Brotherhood to retain control of Egypt and revoke the Camp David Accords, Obama needs Hezbollah to threaten Israel now more than ever.
Being believers in never letting a good crisis go to waste Pres. Obama and his allies in Leftist American news outlets have also milked the crisis for all it’s worth to tamp down news reporting on the numerous scandals circling the administration like a aerial drones, the collapse of support in Congress for an 'Amnesty' Bill and the growing effort by House Republicans to defund Obamacare.
The international crisis over Syria may be at an end. But, just as with Sept 1938 Munich Agreement, the Sept 2013 appeasement of Syria and Russia by Pres. Obama will in the end lead to a wider war in the Middle East and will likely be directed at Israel. Despite the belief among many Americans to the contrary, this is precisely what Pres. Barack Obama wants.
