The Presidential Address is still going on as I write these words in an excited frenzy. One of the topics he touched on caught my attention in a big way. He is focused on teachers, police, and firemen. Out of everything that is wrong in our economy, he has mentioned the three things that are most important to Oregonians. We’re looking at a budget that will cause schools to close early, teachers being laid off, loss of police in this scary time, and firemen, the very people who will save our lives.
President Obama also went on to talk about change and the classrooms of the future. The way things have been done is about to change immensely, and we get to be part of it. What does that mean?
It means that the way we see traditional schooling is going to change. The way things are run is going to change. The things we focus on and make important is going to change. Alternative learning programs used to be viewed as the place where we stick the ‘troubled kids’ who can’t function in a normal high school setting. Now, they will be programs for teachers and home schoolers alike to optimize our children’s’ learning.
There are only a few popping up at in-home daycares who are offering kindergarten programs, and supporting parent-chosen home school programs, but we will see a swing in the education system of the future, because what we have is not working.
There are many other facets to the stimulus package that President Obama is proposing, but the fact that he sees a problem and made a point to talk about education of the future shows me that he cares about the family as a whole.
Keep your word, President Obama, the whole world is watching to see what we do.
