President Barack Obama took time away from the White House on Saturday as he and First Lady Michelle Obama attended the wedding of Sam Kass, the Obama’s chef, and MSNBC host Alex Wagner. The newlywed couple was married at a restaurant called Blue Hill at Stone Barns in Westchester County, according to a Huffington Post report on Saturday evening. The event was held at the upscale restaurant in Pocantico Hills, New York.

The restaurant is described as non-traditional and rather pricy. Blue Hill at Stone Barns in Westchester County, according to the New York Daily News, does not have traditional menus. It offers, instead, a grazing, picking, rooting selection of in-season foods and flavors. The price is $198 or just two items for $138. The connection between groom Kass and the Blue Hill restaurant is the restaurant’s executive chef, Dan Barber. Barber is said to be one of Kass’ mentors in the chef business.

Of Kass, Barber says that Kass is on the forefront of a social movement. He also says that he has watched Kass’ career with admiration. The Kass connection to the Obama’s goes back in time, as well. Kass is a longtime Obama family friend who goes back to the president’s Chicago days. The 34-year-old chef, Kass, was in charge of Obama’s kitchen in Chicago when Obama was a new senator from Illinois. At the time, in Chicago, Michelle Obama was a working mother with two children – Sasha and Malia – and therefore Kass reportedly did what he needed to do to keep them eating healthfully.

Kass has also been a senior food policy adviser for Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move!” initiative which is a campaign against child obesity. While Kass generally keeps quiet about the Obama’s menus, he has said that he always serves a vegetable and goes for all whole wheat grains. Additionally, he says he cooks fish, chicken and an occasional steak for them. One may also recognize Kass’ name from news articles about the president’s vacations and leisure time, as Kass is a regular golf associate of Obama’s.

As for the newlyweds, Kass and Wagner, who is 36 years old, met at a party following the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Other recent White House staff members who have been married include Pete Souza. Souza, Obama’s chief official photographer was married last October in the White House’s Rose Garden. Additionally, Obama attended Senior Advisor Valerie Jarrett’s daughter’s wedding in Chicago two years ago.
