Last night, millions watched as President Obama made his first State of the Union address since being re-elected in November.
In a speech televised nationwide, Obama outlined his ambitious agenda for his second term in office. Subjects that he touched on during the speech included raising the minimum wage to $9, passing further immigration reform, and passing gun control laws. As many hoped, however, the economy and job creation was the cornerstone of the speech.
With many still unemployed or seeking jobs, perhaps there is one job we can all agree on that we would not want to have: the job of the President.
While Obama did inherit a country on the brink of economic disaster when he took office in 2008, many believe that he has not done enough for the country in terms of fixing the economy and promoting job creation. During the November election, that was unsurprisingly one of the things he was most criticized for.
During last night's speech, the President proposed many initiatives that would help low-income Americans, including education reform which benefits even pre-school aged children.
"It is our unfinished task to make sure that this government works on behalf of the many, and not just the few; that it encourages free enterprise, rewards individual initiative, and opens the doors of opportunity to every child across this great nation,'' Obama stated in his speech.
Now the question on everyone's mind is: "How much will this cost us as taxpayers?"
Perhaps we can all agree that stronger gun control laws would protect our children. We can all agree that we do not want the tragic events of the Newtown, Connecticut school shooting to happen again.
However, another thing we can probably all agree on is that we do not want to pay higher taxes.Obama's plan, while ambitious and certainly noble, may just be too expensive for the United States to afford.
