Vivian Giang's article bemoaning the state of today's job market lists "11 Jobs From 1850 That Are Totally Extinct."
But are they? Here are a few of her examples.
Drover – Someone who drives cattle or sheep.
Has Giang never been to Texas? How does she think cattle get moved from one pasture to another, or get herded through loading chutes into trucks?
Chimney sweep – Someone who inspects and cleans chimneys.
Dallas Yellow Pages lists 24 "chimney sweeps" and Ft. Worth YP lists 26.
Match makers – Someone whose job consists of matching two people up, usually for the purpose of marriage.
This is a multimillion dollar industry called "online dating services." Ever heard of Match.com, eHarmony, Zoosk, OurTime, and more?
Occultists – People who study magic, alchemy, extra-sensory perception, astrology, spiritualism, and divination.
They've simply changed their name to New Agers and moved to Sedona, Arizona where they offer aura colors reading, vortex energy, crystals, incense and healing stones.
The writer got it wrong about these "totally extinct" jobs because she depended on the government to tell her what jobs do or don't exist any more, i.e., according to the Standard Occupational Classifications from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Here are a few jobs that no longer exist based on real life experience.
Computer equipment repairer – It's cheaper to trash stuff that quits working than to fix it. Once your all-inclusive wi fi printer-scanner-copier-fax-toaster-blender-can opener dies good luck finding someone who knows how or even wants to repair it.
Teacher of logic – since virtually all schools in the US from pre to graduate are government certified, funded, regulated, controlled and otherwise dictated to these schools don't train teachers to think logically or teach logic. Their job is to teach fresh young minds to blindly accept the propaganda the government ruling class wants them to believe.
Socialist and Fascist – These jobs haven't existed in America for a very long time. Even as the political left brands the right as fascists and the right accuse the left of being socialists neither seem to comprehend that they're both right. Apparently it's only libertarians who recognize that America's social policy with its massive government-run welfare programs is socialist while its economic system in which government "allows" businesses to be privately "owned" while dictating nearly every aspect of their existence is fascism. Since former socialists and fascists seem happy with this arrangement their job title is "Statist."
