The latest Gallup poll shows that President Obama's approval rating is in free-fall. Just 42% of adults now approve of the job Obama is doing as President. Fully 50% disapprove. This latest poll is a three-day rolling average taken from July 13th to July 15th.
Comparing Obama's current poll numbers with those from just a month or two ago shows a rapid decline. A poll taken from May 22nd to 24th had him at 53% approval and just 41% disapproval. Another poll taken from May 29th to June 1st had the President at 53% approval and just 39% disapproval. An even more recent poll taken from June 4th to 6th had him at 50% approval and just 40% disapproval.
So it appears that the President's approval numbers have dropped 8 points and his disapproval numbers have risen by 10 points in less than six weeks. How did this happen?
A few things come to mind. His bin Laden bump has slowly dissipated, as most expected it eventually would. The economy continues to disappoint, with unemployment now up to 9.2% and projections for economic growth downgraded. Finally, there is the debt ceiling debate, in which the President is demanding tax increases.
President Obama's prospects for reelection in 2012 look grim right now, but one of the fascinating things about politics is how quickly things can change. Stay tuned!
