Obama's deal on unemployment extensions does not include tier 5 for 99ers

President Obama last night announced a deal he has made with Republicans to continue unemployment extensions for those who have not received 99 weeks of benefits.  The New York labor department yesterday warned unemployed residents that Congress has not yet passed the legislation, adding that "without passage, approximately 200,000 New Yorkers will lose their benefits by year’s end."

Donny Shaw of OpenCongress explained Obama's agreement succinctly this morning:  "The filing deadline for federal unemployment insurance that provides benefits for people who run out of their 26 weeks of state-provided benefits without finding a job would be extended until January 2012.   Essentially, this will make it possible for people who became unemployed in the past 99 weeks and still haven’t found a job to collect benefits for the same length of time as people who lost their job more than 99 weeks ago. This would not add additional weeks of benefits — 99 weeks would still be the maximum amount of time that anybody could receive benefits."

The New York labor department will be answering questions on its "Labor Buzz" page today, as it does every Tuesday.

Major news outlets reported the news on the 99ers incorrectly last night and continued to do so this morning.  ABC News said this morning on its website that the deal includes a "13-month extension of unemployment benefits beyond the current limit of 99 weeks."  The proposed legislation does not extend beyond 99 weeks.

The President's statement can be read in its entirety here. The legislation must still be passed by Congress.

The following is part of a note from 99er T.C.:

"As you can see from the time on this email, I have no concept of time anymore. I spend most of my day scouring job sites, following up with temp agencies and on the job boards of the Department of labor (which I may add, is a total waste)!  I have been a 99ers since Nov of this year. I exhausted all of my benefits the 1st week of October ... I have been on an emotional roller coaster over these past 2 years. My marriage is failing due to the strains of finance, my car was repoed, I have had several promising interviews that turned out to be dead, my health is declining due to stress and to top it all of I am only 30 YEARS OLD. This was not apart of the plan I had in place for my life.
I worked 2 jobs during college and even after I was married. My hubby begged me to let one go just so that we would see each other. I did in hopes of starting a family, so this is not the story of a LAZY person leaching off the government.  At this point I feel I am entitled to still be able to help provide for my family and not be at the mercy of congress and their political schemes to keep people dependent!
I am starting to realize that I am just another 99er...I just wanted to share my story."

ONE DAY ITS THE PRESIDENT SAYING THAT ALL 99ER'S WORKED FOR THE TIER 5 AND SHOULD GET IT NOW TODAY HE DOES NOT GIVE IT TO US. I HOPE HE REALIZES THAT HE
JUST BLEW HIS 2012 RE-ELECTION CHANCES WITH ME. HE
JUST WENT AGAINST EVERYTHING THAT I THOUGHT HE STOOD FOR.....THE MIDDLE CLASS!!! NOW HE GOES AGAINST HIS WORD. NO ONE CAN TELL ME THAT IF HE DID NOT GET AN EXTENDION FOR UNEMPLOYMENT NOW THAT HE WOULD NOT HAVE GOT IT EVENTUALLY BEFORE THE END OF THE YEAR. THEY TAKE AWAY SOCIAL SECURITY INCREASES AND EVERYTHING ELSE, BUT WHAT HAS THE GOVERNMENT GIVEN UP.......HOW ABOUT A RAISE.....HOW ABOUT A CUT IN THEIR PAY OR A CUT IN THE PRESIDENTS PAY. DID ANYONE SEE THESE PEOPLE OFFER TO DO SOMETHING LIKE GIVE UP
ANYTHING THAT THEY GET?????NEVER..THIS OBAMA IS NO
BETTER THAN ANY OTHER GUY IN THERE..........CLINTON SHOULD HAVE WON. SOME WOMEN ARE STRONGER THAN THE MEN I GUESS. IT IS TIME FOR HIM TO JUST BOW OUT..

Kathy, don't be a total moron saying your going to vote republican in 2012 because of this. Your the kind of person w/your thinking that got us all into this mess in the first place voting this republicans in that aren't doing anything for us unemployed. Go ahead and vote republican. You then have no reason to complain about anything, your getting exactly what you wanted. NOTHING!

  • YouAreTheProblem 1 year ago

This comment above by ktokathy, is the EXACT REASONING behind why all the 99ers are even in this dilemma. Let me first say that I SUPPORT THE GOP, THOUGH I ALSO FULLY SUPPORT THE UEC EXTENSION AND SUPPORT ADDITIONAL TIERS (b/c I am human and politics should stay out of it when it comes to lives of our people). But, with that...go ahead and bash the President and Dems, and b/c you are not getting what you want right now. This is the same thinking that got the 99ers in this spot right now. GOOD, so in 2012, go ahead and vote GOP (I would love it). If the Americans stuck to their guns and sided with the Dems in the recent Congressional elections, I am 100% positive that there would be a tier 5,6,etc...but the country (just like ktokathy is stating), balked on the Dems and voted TeaParty or GOP...NOW YOU GET WHAT YOU WANT. Politics and politicians only care about YOU, the AMERICAN person WHEN THEY NEED YOUR VOTE, once they get it...who are you to them...nothing, dont kid yourself. People like you said, "I am not getting what I want from this admin, so lets switch it up"...just like what happened with the recent elections. NOW YOU GET WHAT YOU VOTED FOR. If you don't REALLY know politics...then dont vote...b/c like many, you will vote in something much worse (for you), than you expected (b/c politicians are masters of deception....just for example...the GOP was saying that the American people voted the way they did in the recent elections b/c they wanted to reduce spending and reduce the deficit, so any UEC extension MUST be paid for....but on the other hand, they want an un-paid-for tax extension at a cost of 70Billion per year. To me, and avg individual, this makes no sense Which is it, the people want to reduce spending, or just reduce spending on things that are not beneficial to the GOP and it's financial backers....the LATTER is correct, while many see the first point and say, "see, they did listen and are doing what we want"....those people should not vote, as you are more gullible than McFly...dang, after writing all this, it shows exactly how dumb our socitey is, no wonder are country is in the pits when the common citizen's thinking is so limited that just b/c someone in a suit says something, it must be true). In politics, the statement of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" is NOT always true. So Kathy, go ahead an bash the pres or change your vote, you will get what you want (well, not what YOU want, but you will get what you vote for). Lastly, I ask all 99ers this (and it is not mean hearted, just a question). WHAT WILL YOU ASK FOR AND WANT, IF YOU DO GET A TIER 5, AND IT EXPIRES, AND YOU STILL HAVE NO JOB...right now you are saying, "all we want is just a tier 5"...but in 20 weeks, will you say, "all we want is a tier 6"...this was probably the SAME case for tiers 1-4 (as I dont know for sure b/c I was not interested in the issue back then...but I would bet everything I own that it was the SAME THING...the gov doesnt care about us, we just need a tier 2, etc...am I right? You weren' t talking all this mess when you got a tier 2, 3, 4, were you?). Again, I support a tier 5 and and UEC extension...but dont bash the president...look in the mirror and at your community for voting for my GOP candidates thinking it will be a cause for change b/c that is what they told you when they needed your vote (and they are from the same party that made it almost impossible for even a basic UEC extension at all). Before you come on the net to bash and complain, get some facts, take a look at reality. To those same people, I have a big bridge and a big statue for sale both located in NY...if you have interest in purchasing them for 50% off, please email me.

I totally agree with you but what is the alternative? Mitt Romney is a Wall Street
vampire who acts like one of the Osmond brothers. He has made his millions by laying off workers who are probably at the 99 week limit. Would be be more sympathetic than Obama. The other candidates don't justify mention. Obama is a devious operator and phony but they all are the same. This country needs a credible progressive third party to flush out the government.

13 months go by very fast. In 13 months, there will be about 15 Million 99ers! Let's see how our country will look like, with 15 million people jobless, income less...Very dark days coming, the wealthy getting wealthier, the poor poorer...

If something isn't done to ease the burden on families, things are going to get bad out there. Desperate people will take desperate measures to survive. It's going to turn into a "Road Warrior" scenario. Just look at whats happening in Argentina, one of South America's most modern countries is in serious trouble since their economic collapse earlier this decade-- even though the mainstream media isn't reporting it.

  • michigan 99'er 1 year ago

GOT BAD! Jackson county recently. Father sells three kids, woman missing, boyfriends company went under recieved stolen property and hung himself in jail. These where hard working people who finally lost it when there government gave up on them. Please pass a Tier 5 so my family doesn't end up another statistic. Oh and thanks for ruining my daughters yputh, we had to tell them about santa.

  • RBINT 1 year ago

I was very surprised by this agreement, in that 99ers were not even addressed. I have contacted Rep. Weiner and S.3706 cosponsors in the hopes that if the President is willing to cave on tax cuts, he will at least ensure that everyone will benefit.

Ironically, even the unemployed who are not 99ers will not receive much help for this. What about those that need the extensions to move into Tier 4?

Our President is in desperate need of better economic advisors with real world experience.

  • Concerned American 1 year ago

I am not unemployed, however I know a few people that are and they are over 55 and 60 years of age. It is sad to see people
depend on a check from the insurance they paid for all their lives and then be cut off because no one will hire someone who may be able to start drawing s/s soon. These people have no insurance, home, car or food without help from our government.
The economy can't improve unless people spend money and that includes unemployment checks. The 99ers are Americans too and they need the same as the people who have a regular income. There should be some special program where companies are receiving for hiring older Americans or a way to help these people continue on unemployment.
I believe we help other countries more than we help the unemployed.

  • Anonymous2 1 year ago

True, Concerned American, this is a true disaster situation going on our own soil but it has been "covered up" to the general public (the Media instructed to use ways/words/phrases to make the rest of the world believe that ALL unemployed people are being taken care of) and ignored. Families, millions of them, have been going through serious trouble and pain, through no fault of their own, simply because they had been let go from their jobs and haven't been able to get another one; entire families being thrown out to the streets and now in this harsh winter season because they no longer have the money to pay for shelter, and yet, if there is a disaster going somewhere in the world, the USA is the first to show up! Humanitarian spirit? Really? How about their own people, who have paid taxes for so many years, who so dearly and proudly loved and contributed for their country in so many ways? This picture is not right, is there ANYONE out there who is man or woman enough and as well powerful to stand for what is right, so that all of the "forgotten" will see real hope, compassion and justice, here in our own USA?

to your unemployment agencies. Pass the word and tell all people to start/ KEEP making

    those phone calls!
    Also: REMEMBER!
Remember those politicians who put you here.
    The businesses who caused this.
The people who called you lazy.
And NEVER DO BUSINESS WITH THESE PEOPLE AGAIN!
You will get a job eventually, but if you dont make a lifelong commitment to never do

business with those people again then you are a hipocrite. Start taking names of

politicians, businesses and individual people now and keep those lists Forever. Pass

those lists on to others. Only do business with those who stood beside you in these

times. Local or national, doesnt matter. Support businesses and people who saw this

mess for what was, a greedy money grab at the expense of the common people. My

name is Louis Hinkley and Im running for president of the United States. Together WE

can make them regret the day they ever did this to us. First we must come together and

    commit.

I have worked since I was 14 and put myself through school and was in a high profile position, and now 34 I lost my job on July of 2009 lost my job due to management consolidation.

My last reivew was a highly exceeds, and I worked my butt off for my company. So during this time of being off work on unemployment, I have applied for over 2,000 jobs and interviewed for over 100.
I live in Ohio and the unemployment rate is high. It kills me to hear of people talking so negative about others and how ones are lazy and taking advantage of this system.

Well if taking advantage is getting our cars repo-and homes foreclosed, and selling everything we have---damn we are taking sooooo much advantage of this RIGHT...
Walk in ones shoes for a day, go days without eating because your children need to eat.

I have learned so much from this happening to me, and it has given me a different look at people as humans, that we are surviors and we do what we have to do...

Be thankful if you have a job, and dont point fingers at others that you have no clue what there stories are.

P.S I have paid taxes for over 20 years ---So I have paid into something RIGHT!

Yes but it's paid for you working there. Therefor on your behalf means it's yours. Can you pay into unemployment without being an employer? Of course not. It's your money! Get it right please.

  • RBINTN 1 year ago

It's true that in most states, employees do not pay into unemployment directly. In some, like NJ, they do. But in every case, employers consider that cost as part of their business expenses in their calculations of what they can pay their workers. From that standpoint, we all effectively pay into unemployment, Shelby.

Now all the know-it-alls have to come out in full force just to prove how right they are. Anyway, payimg your taxes is paying for unemployment. How do you think anything gets paid for in this country? Magic beans? NOOOOO tax payers are a big part of it. ALL unemployed should be included. In high population states there are just no jobs PERIOD. It's not our fault.

Idk what to think. Major news outlets don't usually report things without getting the correct .

  • Harold 1 year ago

It sucks that the 99er's aren't included. I know plenty of people that really need it.
I exhausted my benefits earlier this year as well, however, I saw the writing on the wall back in 2008 and started making plans to go into business for myself.
Thank God for the amount of UE that I did received because it financed this new business, or else I'd be out on the street right now.

I feel for my friends with families that can't find anything. I know there isn't anything out there and everyday is spent trying to get to the next one for the sake of all of the mouths you have to feed and keep warm.

However, my single friends that have no responsibilities could have come up with something by now..if nothing else but to learn a new skill with the time they have had sitting around complaining about how bad things are.

i have no sympathy for them.

  • BobC 1 year ago

It's a damn shame that many of the long term unemployed have suffered by no fault of their own, but the greed of Wall Street. The government bailed out those companies who caused the problem but turns their back on those people who desperately need assistance.

As a 99er who has now gone four months without any income, who needs to keep his internet going just so I can continue to send out resumes and seek work. Who has sent out over 3000 resumes with no positive results, makes phone calls and has even begged for work just to keep the roof over his head, I beg the government to come to our rescue.

I have had to cancel my car insurance because I can't afford it. I risk the chance of being arrested or have my car impounded because I have no car insurance if I drive it. When my phone gets disconnected, what am I supposed to do to contact employment agencies for work? I have no health insurance, but with this new health plan if I don't sign up, I risk being fined by the government. How am I supposed to pay for it. I can't even heat my home.

I am losing everything I worked for over the last 35 years. I voted for change, but not for a change for the worst.

For the government to turn it's back on the 99ers now is just down right dumb, but stupid! It will only cause more foreclosures, more financial strain on the economy and put millions on the edge of homelessness. This is just wrong in so many ways! WAKE UP WASHINGTON! Stop bailing out the rich and the criminals and help those who supported you and elected you to office to look out for our best interest. You are failing miserably and your jobs. Maybe you should live through what we live through on a daily basis!

OBAMA, Let's 99ERs Crash Land, No Parachutes
2011 Officially The Year Of The HOBO!
    You Should Learn The Language?

Today graffiti is prevalent on walls, residences, businesses and the infrastructure in America. A result of gangs slinging communication at each other while leaving the general public puzzled and bewildered.
But this isn't the first time that indigenous groups have used code to converse with each other. In the 1930's millions of Hobos developed their own unique system of symbols which could be found on
street curbs buildings and crossroads nationwide.

The meanings of the symbols reached the vagabonds riding the rails that arrows and geometric shapes were a communication highway. Will this truly American underground dialect be called back for today's
unemployed survival? When millions of unemployed patriots are kicked to the streets to be belittled, starve and disenfranchised, then a peaceful outcome is unpredictable. Add to this how many millions of
newly minted HOBOs recently working class believe their situation is their own fault when they know an unregulated Wall Street took them for the ride?

Do we really want our National Guard posted and on stand bys to prevent civil unrest? Is it worth it to the GOP Tea Party millionaires at the tax cut trough, to increase costs in homeland security because of their obsessive compulsive contempt for the unemployed? Will it be worth then to America to leave the unemployed 99ERs extension in the abyss?

What I see happening is, everyone going to work and accepting LESS pay, for more work. I think this is a huge wakeup call for everyone. Sure there will be some that won't find a job because those that are willing to work for less and put out more will get that position and keep it. Better suit up and get to the streets. Instead of complaining, start maximizing your abilities and take less, offer up more, and quit thinking your too good for this or that job. You 99ers are not the only ones affected. You being affected just came a lot sooner than those who will become 99ers over the next 13 months. They should have all the right in the world to collect whats rightfully theirs just like you did. I am glad he is putting an end to all the welfare checks, hhaha oops I surely meant UI Checks. It's about time. KUDOS TO THE PREZ.

P.S. NO YOU DIDN'T PAY INTO UNEMPLOYMENT. YOUR EMPLOYERS DID. JUST BECAUSE YOU WORKED THERE HAS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH PAYING IN TO UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE. GET REAL. GET INFORMED. I WISH THERE WAS NOT UNEMPLOYMENT SO EVERYONE WOULD NOT EXPECT HANDOUTS. EQUALLY WITH WELFARE

  • MandiP 1 year ago

Shelby, you are not all correct. In some American States and industries, employees contribute to Unemployment Insurance and a percentage is taken out of their paychecks. In other circumstances, (usually bigger corporations) the employer pays a percentage based on how many people they have/will hire for the quarter. Still in other, there are a combination of the two. Unemployment is not a hand out, it is not welfare and is on a different level as in each state there are minimum qualification levels (least of all being at a job/have worked for several years) and to get a UI check most states demand a job interview log or more. Unemployment Insurance is just that - Insurance against Unemployment, just like your car, your health, etc. The Feds are involved because unemployment levels are HUGE - and hasn't been like this since the 70's. The Feds have the mandate to pay and extend UI benefits to American displaced workers after 26 weeks, not charge the employer, and have done so in many administrations (including the last one!). So the Employers aren't even involved in this one as they would be in the 26 weeks - everyone is. And everyone who has worked or owns a company needs help to get back to normalcy. This is beyond spouting things one had "heard" somewhere rather than know what is happening not only in their State, but in others. There is NOT 'one blanket that covers all' for this sad situation.
