Obama punishes military veterans by supporting illegal immigration critics say

Texas military veterans seemed to be especially “punished” because of White House policies regarding illegal immigration and the current crisis on the U.S. and Mexico border. Over 19,000 military veterans are out of work in Texas and a growing number of citizens are becoming more frustrated with the lack of support from the Federal government.

“Obama, Hillary, and the liberals have been too busy lying, trying to cover up their mistakes and helping more illegal aliens into the United States to bother with our homeless and unemployed vets,” said Bexar County veteran Antony Benavidez. “We are waiting for too long to get any of the assistance we were promised by Obama long ago. Why is he punishing us?”

The number of minor illegal aliens flood into the U.S. is exploding. In 2009 El Salvadorian children totaled 1,221 arriving. So far, this fiscal year, 13,301 have entered. Five years ago, Guatemalan children totaled 1,115. This partial year has already totaled 14,086. Honduras had 968 back then, with 16,546 totaled this year so far. Mexicans minors arriving totaled 16,114. This year the total has already reached 12,614.

Since September 11, 2001 over 26 million visas have been issued by the federal government to foreigners to work in the United States which has placed substantial burdens such as more unemployment, declining wages and increasing poverty.

The Obama White House, through Department of Agriculture secretary Tom Vilsack, has been actively advertising food stamp programs in these countries, especially in Mexico.

U.S. Senator Jeff Sessions (R-AL) has been a long time critic and opposes this practice.

“It has become increasingly clear that the mission of the food stamp program has moved from targeted welfare assistance for those in need into an aggressive drive to expand enrollment regardless of need,” Sessions wrote to Vilsack in July 18, 2012. “To cite just one example, a character in a USDA-produced Spanish language ‘radio novella’ tries to convince a friend to enroll in food stamps even though that individual says ‘I don’t need anyone’s help. My husband earns enough to take care of us.’ The first individual responds, ‘When are you going to learn?’ Pride ought to be celebrated, not mocked.”

Vilsack has virtually ignored Sessions and other critics by stepping up the practice of soliciting more foreigners to take advantage of the American welfare programs. Sessions tried to insert an amendment in the Democrat’s budget hearing at the Senate Budget Committee last year, that would stop the practice of the USDA working with these foreign countries to promote advertising food stamps but Senate Democrats voted against it.

On Sunday’s “Face the Nation” program on CBS, Texas Gov. Rick Perry said Obama is just “not interested” with handling the issue and that he had warned Obama two years ago about the pending crisis.

“It could have been stopped years ago had the administration listened, had the administration been focused on the border with Texas,” Perry said. “Time after time you see a response from this administration that says, ‘You know what, we’re really not that interested in the southern border of the United States.’ ”

In May 2012, Perry wrote to Obama urging the President to help.

“By failing to take immediate action to return these minors to their countries of origin and prevent and discourage others from coming here, the federal government is perpetuating the problem.” Perry stated in the letter. “Inaction encourages other minors to place themselves in extremely dangerous situations. . . .Every day of delay risks more lives. Every child allowed to remain encourages hundreds more to attempt the journey.”

Perry went so far as to say “I have to believe that when you do not respond in any way, that you are either inept, or you have some ulterior motive of which you are functioning from,” on ABC’s “This Week” last Sunday.

The issue reached a boiling point in 2010 at the El Paso airport runway when Perry handed a letter regarding immigration to Obama who refused it.

“The letter showed the current condition, what could happen if it was ignored and suggestions on how we can improve security at our border,” Perry later explained.

“The president wouldn’t even take it. He told him to give it to Valerie Jarrett, who was standing behind him,” then Perry’s chief of staff Ray Sullivan said.

Fox News reported that House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Va. knew the White House has known about the pending flood of immigrants for some time."

"There is a lack of leadership, I think, on the part of the president in getting ahead of this issue, starting with dealing with the Mexican government and the governments of these three Central American countries and asking for their help," Goodlatte told Fox.

Texas Rep. Henry Cuellar, a Democrat whose district covers much of the Rio Grande Border area, in an interview with Fox News, compared Obama’s blunder with the Hurricane Katrina humiliation for George W. Bush.

“At least Katrina was a natural disaster that Bush couldn’t help,” noted Benavidez when he heard about Cuellar’s comment. “In this case, Obama has deliberately caused the crisis and is doing very little to stop it from happening and helping us, our own citizens. Like all my friends are talking about how it’s like Obama wants this to happen.”

“How can Obama’s people advertise and support bringing train loads of these innocent children and adults, some with violent pasts and affiliated with dangerous gangs into our state and our country and do absolutely nothing for the military and our veterans,” asked Benavidez. “What are we going to do about our on American families and my fellow vets who live here that are starving, do not have jobs or homes?”

“We must honor our commitments to those who selflessly answer the call of duty,” responded state attorney general Greg Abbott. “A simple ‘thank you for your service’ is inadequate to truly repay the debt of gratitude we owe our heroes.”

Abbott has announced a multi-level plan to get more veterans back to work when he becomes governor. The plan includes ridding the burdens of government bureaucracy and fees for veterans.

Abbott says he will start by exempting “new businesses formed by veterans from state registration fees and exempt them from the state franchise tax for five years.”

“Texans have long defended the nation, sending our sons and daughters to fight in the trenches of Europe, on the high seas and remote islands in the Pacific, in the jungles and mountains of Asia, in the desert sands of the Middle East, and beyond,” stated Abbott. “More than a million from Texas have served, and many more have trained and lived on military installations in Texas.”

Abbott says he also will waive license exams and fees for veterans who already have the education, training and experience through their military service.

“How does Obama get by with closing down our fellow American veteran’s ceremonies in Washington and at the World War II memorial but supported the pro-immigration protests there,” Benavidez cried? “He is deliberately hurting the military and our veterans and deliberately encouraging Muslims, cartel gangs and illegal immigration.”

Texas leaders are responding against the White House hard.

“These men and women exhibit qualities that our nation greatly values in the civilian workforce,” Abbott said. “Even so, the transition between military life and a return to the civilian world can be difficult, and one of the greatest difficulties can be finding a job. Texas must do all it can to ease this transition by improving economic opportunities for our veterans.”

Abbott sited the work of the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) who can credit “verified military training, or education toward the licensing requirements” in lieu of state bureaucratic processes.

This could include waiving fees and licensing exams for the veterans who already have the correct training and experience for certain jobs, as well as authorize property tax exemptions locally hired veterans for businesses.

In 2013, there were about 897,000 employed veterans in Texas, with unemployment at 5.2% for this category. This compared to a 6.3% unemployment rate all of Texas and 6.7% nationally.

Abbott indicated that this figure might look better than some states it is important to note that “8.7 percent of veterans in Texas who have returned home since the September 2001 terrorist attacks were unemployed in 2013, up from 8.3 percent in 2012. Those who served our country in the recent period are unemployed at a rate much higher than the state and the national average.”

“Too many barriers still exist for veterans attempting to thrive in Texas’ economic climate by starting their own businesses or those transitioning back into the civilian workforce,” Abbott emphasized. “These barriers can be lowered by removing bureaucratic requirements, offering relief from certain taxes and fees that deter entrepreneurship, and ensuring that the state’s military infrastructure is protected.

Some example occupations mentioned by Abbott include air conditioning and refrigeration, barbers, electricians, residential wireman, journeyman master sign installers, architectural registered accessibility specialist, polygraph examiners, water well drillers and water pump installers.
