Long before his rapidly declining approval rating, Barack Obama seemed to have a running connection to comic book figures. Before appearing on the Marvel Comics Spiderman cover, before the 'Super Obama' t shirt, and 'Obama Joker' posters, Obama stood in the shadow... literally... of Superman himself. In an undated photograph most likely taken when he was an Illinois Senator, Barack Obama strikes a "super" pose in front of a giant Superman statue in Metropolis, Illinois. As of this month, January 2010, the statue has an odd addition: a black band wrapped around his left bicep. Click here to see that recent photo.
In January 2009, after learning that Obama collects Spiderman comic books, Marvel Comics put Obama in an Inauguration edition. Marvel announced the 'team up' of Spidey and Obama on their website.
In September 2008, comic artist Alex Ross released a Clark Kent type superhero pose of candidate Obama on a T shirt , with the L.A. Times characterizing it as 'hero worship'. Around the time of the Spiderman comic edition, PrisonPlanet.com reported on a strange cultural phenomenon, Celebrities Pledge Cult-Like “Service” To Obama Government' . In the summer of 09, however, the mesmerization was shattered as Obama began to be mocked, with Obama Joker posters going 'viral' internationally.
Regardless of what this presidency will bring, the superhero complex seems to be here to stay.
