When Barack Obama reiterated his support for Turkey to become part of the European Union (EU), the response from its members was "He [Obama] should accept Turkey as America's 51st state instead."
The reaction to Obama's words said in the Muslim nation
Turkey is bound to Europe by more than bridges over the Bosporus....Centuries of shared history, culture and commerce bring you together. And Turkish membership would broaden and strengthen Europe's foundation once more.
was immediate and angry.

It is meddling in the internal affairs of Europe. The EU is not Obama's plaything....

There is no question that the US has a voice in NATO. But when it comes to membership in its own club, the EU decides for itself. We don't need any tutoring from abroad.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy said
...when it comes to the European Union, it is up to its member states...to decide.
Former President George W. Bush had also encouraged the accession the predominantly Muslim country which was not welcomed by EU members. Now Obama is being told,
Turkey, as a self-proclaimed representative of the Muslim world, clearly doesn't if in.
The message to Obama from the EU is
...mind your own business; we don't want them but if you do, make them a part of the United States.

How is it meddling to mention the obvious? It would be one thing, perhaps, if Europeans were not constantly expressing opinions about how America should behave, but they do. Really, it's downright ironic for European to accuse any other part of the world of meddling in it's affairs, given the past few centuries of history, to say nothing of modern times.
Especially given that so many of the arguments, including several that you cite and seem to support above, reject Turkey solely on the basis that it's a majority Muslim country, as if religious discrimination were anything noble or defensible.
I would rather have him meddle in their affairs than ours.
If I were in the European Union I would not want Obama telling us to admit Turkey no more than I would want France telling us to admit Mexico. If they admit Turkey (I know they have a simi-secular government) what happend if Islamist come to power?
