Obama marijuana: President Obama 'smoked pot as a kid,' less unsafe than booze

An Obama marijuana statement this week has received a lot of buzz after President Obama finally made his thoughts concerning the drug clear this week. Affirming that he too smoked pot as a kid, the U.S. political leader essentially noted that marijuana is not any less unsafe than booze or tobacco, at least regarding its specific impact on users. The CS Monitor highlights Obama’s interview with the New Yorker and how his support of weed has been received by the public this Monday, Jan. 20, 2014.

The Obama marijuana comment was likely mentioned due to the legalization of the drug in Washington and Colorado being common in the news in recent weeks. The President noted that while he has told his daughters not to smoke weed, he did smoke pot as a kid. However, he still views it as a vice, though does not deem it more dangerous than drinking booze or smoking regular tobacco.

“As has been well documented, I smoked pot as a kid, and I view it as a bad habit and a vice, not very different from the cigarettes that I smoked as a young person up through a big chunk of my adult life,” President. Obama said.

The U.S. leader noted that what worried him greatly was the fact that it was mostly minorities, as well as low-income Americans, that would continue to probably be caught and arrested for different offenses involving marijuana. He said that there is already a very disproportionate amount of these drug-related crimes with these groups.

“Middle-class kids don’t get locked up for smoking pot, and poor kids do,” he said.

According to what is being called the Obama marijuana interview, President Obama added that he feels it is significant to see how states like Washington and Colorado do while having small amounts of recreational use weed legal. He did put in a caveat, however, that smoking pot won’t solve problems.

“If marijuana is fully legalized and at some point folks say, 'Well, we can come up with a negotiated dose of cocaine that we can show is not any more harmful than vodka,' are we open to that?” said Obama.

“I’ve told my daughters (Sasha and Malia) I think it’s a bad idea, a waste of time,” said President Obama.

Do you agree that smoking marijuana is indeed less unsafe than booze or tobacco products? With weed being so prevalent in the news lately, there is even mention of a Marijuana Bowl should both the Seahawks and Broncos make it to the Super Bowl 2014.
