Barack Obama may still be proving after all of these years that he has an unusual ability to speak well. However, a lot of people think he has turned out to be just another smooth talking clever politician who made a lot of eloquent promises to get elected and than delivered on few of his promises. On the issue of Guantanamo Obama falls into this category. Al Jazeera reported on Oct. 7, 2013, "Human rights groups say Obama has failed on Guantanamo."
On Monday President Barack Obama was accused by leading human rights groups of not following through on a commitment to shut down the prison at Guantanamo Bay. Guantanamo is the highly controversial U.S. run military detention center located in Cuba where a mass hunger strike among its detainees occured in recent months.
Deep concern has been expressed by 16 human-rights and civil-liberties organizations in a letter to Obama that he has failed to fulfill commitments he made during a major counterterrorism speech earlier this year to tackle the issue of the prison. Atlanta Blackstar has reported, "Activists Slam Obama For Failure to Close Guantanamo Bay Prison." Obama has been urged by activists to close Guantanamo and to push to have more of the prisoners transferred elsewhere.
The large majority of inmates are being held without charge or any prospects of release even though many have been cleared to be transferred or to be set free. The Guantanamo prison story is turning out to be a dark chapter in American history. Obama should review this situation carefully before he ends up taking the entire blame for the establishment of President George W. Bush's concentration camp in Cuba, where human rights of prisoners have not been respected.
