Obama: ‘I was elected to end wars, not start them’

President Barack Obama says he was elected to “was elected to end wars, not start them.”

“I was elected to end wars, not start them,” Obama said during a Press Conference at the G20.

“I’ve spent the last four and a half years doing everything I can to reduce our reliance on military power as a means of meeting our international obligations and protecting the American people,” Obama added. “But what I also know is, is that there are times where we have to make hard choices if we’re going to stand up for the things that we care about. And I believe that this is one of those times.”

The nation is divided on the appropriate response to allegations the Syrian government used chemical weapons on its citizens. Obama is planning to appeal for military action during a Tuesday televised address, according to Voice of America.

“Gassing innocent people, delivering chemical weapons against children is not something we do,” Obama said. “It’s prohibited in active wars between countries. We certainly don’t do it against kids. And we’ve got to stand up for that principle.”
