Tonight, President Obama will attend an annual dinner of the Human Rights Campaign, and he is expected to give a speech at the largest gay rights fundraiser in the country. In 1997, Bill Clinton was the first sitting president to address the Human Rights Campaign, and Obama will be the second.
The speech will occur just one day before thousands of people are expected to march in a Washington demonstration calling for a greater legal protection for gays and lesbians. Many gay rights activists have grown frustrated with Obama’s lack of support. Before getting elected he spoke of support for the gays in the military and made promises, but he has not addressed the issues since becoming President. In June, he acknowledged the slow progress, but nothing has been done.
The White House website will air the speech audio in live streaming tonight at 8 pm EST.
