President Barack Obama met with the historic team which had a perfect season – including a Super Bowl championship – in the East Room of the White House. Obama said that it was unorthodox to invite a team to the White House so many years after an accomplishment, and he also pointed out that many of the players and coaches have changed through the years by no longer having Afro-hair styles, muttonchops, and the all-popular-back-in-the-day Fu Manchus.
On the serious side, the president mentioned the accomplishments of the 1972 Dolphins, labeling them as a juggernaut known for having two 2,000 rushers, having doubled opponents’ scores eight times, and having accomplished three shutouts during the season.
Obama also referred to his having hosted the 1985 Chicago Bears at the White House in the past. Obama pleased the Dolphins by reminding them that the Bears had lost one game in that winning season – and it was to the Miami Dolphins.
This was the 54th time Obama has invited a sports team to the White House.
