Obama fainting woman: On Monday, while promoting the Affordable Care Act in the Rose Garden, President Obama paused his speech to catch a fainting diabetic 20-week pregnant woman who was standing right behind him, reported CNN on Oct. 21, 2013.
Karmel Allison, the woman who President Obama was able to catch as she was fainting right behind him, is from San Diego and is a Type 1 diabetic. Karmel Allison was at the Rose Garden event representing the American Diabetes Association. Karmel Allison contributes as a science editor to the website A Sweet Life and works in computational biology at the University of California. Her husband Michael is chief technology officer and co-founder at Nulu and founder and chief technology officer at Minute7.com. The two also have a computer company, Arcaio Inc.
When speaking about her fainting incident and being known now as the fainting woman caught by President Obama, Karmel Allison says that "it was an honor to be there and I'm rather sorry I fainted in the middle of the speech, but I was really happy to be able to be on stage at that moment."
While standing behind President Obama and listening to his speech, Karmel Allison says that she hadn’t had enough to drink in the morning because she had been concerned about having to go to the bathroom; something that most pregnant women can relate to.
As President Obama was speaking, Karmel Allison started to feel faint and got wobbly. When she started to fall backwards, the person behind her broke the fall, and President Obama reached out to catch the fainting woman.
"I got ya," said President Obama, "You're OK."
Turning back to his audience, President Obama joked, “this happens when I talk too long."
After the rescue of the fainting woman, President Obama continued his speech while Karmel Allison was escorted from the stage by an aide and treated by the White House physician.
Karmel Allison, who had found it difficult to find affordable healthcare until the Affordable Care Act and who was grateful for President Obama to pause his speech in order to catch a fainting woman, later tweeted, “I'm ok world- just got a little lightheaded. Thanks, @BarackObama for catching me”
